  • Heavier legs (sinking type): Leg kicking helps lift the hips and maintain a streamlined position, usually requiring a more active kick (4–6 beat) to avoid a “dragging” effect.
  • Lighter legs (naturally buoyant type): These swimmers can easily use the 2-beat without relying on kicking to keep the body horizontal.
  • High ankle flexibility: Flexible ankles are the key to effective kicking—supple ankles make the kicking motion more like a fish fin than a paddle.

The following methods can help you find and refine the kicking rhythm that suits you:

  • Pull buoy test: First use a pull buoy between your legs to practice arm strokes and gauge your speed without leg assistance, then add 2-beat, 4-beat, and 6-beat kicks for 50m each, comparing fatigue levels and speed differences.
  • Kickboard drills: Practice kicking alone with a kickboard for 25m × 8 sets, doing two sets at each rhythm, and compare ankle fatigue.
