One of the core paradoxes of training science is that “training stress is the key that triggers adaptation, but excessive stress locks the door to progress.” This is especially true for HIIT, whose high-intensity metabolic stress and central nervous system load impose a clear upper limit on the number of sessions that can be performed each week.

The Stress and Adaptation Mechanisms of HIIT

After each high-intensity interval session, the body initiates complex repair and adaptation processes:

  • Acute fatigue phase (0–24 hours): Significant muscle glycogen depletion, lactate accumulation, muscle microdamage (especially the eccentric component), and decreased central nervous system excitability

  1. Use the concepts of CTL (Chronic Training Load) and ATL (Acute Training Load), tracking whether training stress is excessive through TrainingPeaks or Garmin Physio features
  2. “Feeling good” does not equal full recovery. Muscle microdamage and central nervous system fatigue often accumulate without noticeable symptoms
  3. Every 4–6 weeks, schedule a “deload week” (reduce total training volume by 40–50%, and lower high-intensity frequency to 1 session per week) to proactively allow full supercompensation to occur
  4. The time pressure of Taiwan’s work culture often leads cyclists to choose “making up for missed training volume with intensity”—this is one of the most common causes of overtraining and should be consciously resisted

Conclusion

The powerful benefits of HIIT cannot be amplified by a “more is better” logic. Scientific HIIT frequency management is about finding the optimal rhythm between training stress and recovery adaptation. For Taiwanese amateur cyclists, most people’s problem is not “doing too little HIIT,” but rather “incorrect intensity distribution”—using too many moderate-intensity workouts to replace the low-intensity aerobic riding they should be doing. Returning to the 80/20 principle and precisely scheduling 1–2 high-intensity interval sessions per week is the correct path to sustained long-term progress.
