1x single chainring setup (38T or 40T + 11-42T):

How to Choose the Right Gearing for Yourself

  1. Determine your target climbing gradient (based on the steepest section, usually the route’s maximum gradient)
  2. Based on your body weight and target cadence (80rpm), calculate the lightest gear ratio you need
  3. Check whether your current cassette’s lightest cog can cover this requirement

Practical simplified guidance:

  • Weight <65kg, FTP >3.5W/kg: a standard climbing setup (34T × 32T) is usually sufficient
  • Weight 65-80kg, FTP 2.8-3.5W/kg: at least 34T × 34T is recommended
  • Weight >80kg or FTP <2.8W/kg: consider an 11-40T or larger cassette, or a specialized setup

Things to Watch When Changing Gearing

  • Rear derailleur compatibility: before installing a larger cassette (34T or above), confirm the rear derailleur’s maximum cog compatibility
  • Chain length: if you switch to a larger cassette, the chain may need to be lengthened to avoid binding
  • Derailleur angle and Q-factor: after installing a smaller chainring, confirm that the front derailleur cage clearance to the chainring is correct
