This plan assumes a 12-week off-season, divided into three months:

Right after the season ends, both body and mind need genuine rest.

- Training content: Easy swimming, with no structural requirements

The off-season is a great time to try other sports, and some activities offer direct transfer benefits to swimming:
- Cycling: Improves cardiorespiratory aerobic capacity and also trains the core and lower body
- Yoga: Improves flexibility and body awareness, indirectly benefiting swimming technique
- Strength training (core and shoulder stability): Addresses common muscular imbalances in swimming
- Jogging: Maintains overall aerobic conditioning
Combinations to avoid: If doing high-impact activities in large volumes during the off-season (such as long-distance running), be careful about overuse injuries to the shoulders and knees.
Practical Advice
- No guilt needed during the off-season: Adequate rest is a necessary condition for sustainable long-term training, not laziness
- Set a “minimum goal” for the off-season: For example, “get in the water at least once a week, swimming at least 1,000m each time.” With a baseline in place, it’s harder to stop training completely
- Use the off-season to improve technique: With light training volume and low pressure, it’s the best time to focus on technical details
- Record how you feel during the off-season: This provides valuable reference for designing the next season’s training plan
- Summer tips for Taiwan: With high water temperatures in summer, it’s recommended to swim in the early morning or evening to avoid the discomfort of midday pool heat
