Introduction

Cycling has used power meters for over 30 years, but the concept of a “running power meter” only truly materialized when Stryd launched in 2015. Today, Stryd is used by over 250,000 runners worldwide and is regarded by many elite marathoners as the best tool for pacing. Taiwanese runners have been relatively late to adopt Stryd, but as power-based training concepts gain traction, more people are starting to wonder: can this tiny pod really change your running training?

How Stryd Measures Power

Taiwan’s road race courses feature significant elevation changes. With traditional heart rate or pace training, runners tend to overexert on climbs and underperform on descents, leading to a collapse in the latter half of the race.

Strategies for using Stryd on hills:

  • Set a target power zone (e.g., Zone 4 lactate threshold run); allow pace to drop on climbs while maintaining steady power
  • On descents, cap power so it doesn’t exceed the upper limit of the target zone, avoiding burning out your legs
  • For windy coastal or high-mountain races (such as the Taitung Taimali Marathon), Stryd Gen 3’s wind sensor makes power more accurate

Real-world example:
Using Stryd to run a Dadaocheng Marathon training session at a steady 240W (Zone 4) that included bridge sections, heart rate naturally rose on the bridge climbs, but energy output (power) remained stable. The feel in the latter half was noticeably more even compared to previous heart-rate-controlled sessions.

How to Get Started with Stryd

  1. Purchase a Stryd: Available in Taiwan through the official website or authorized dealers, priced around NT$5,500–6,500
  2. Pair with a watch: Garmin, COROS, and Apple Watch (Stryd App) are all supported
  3. Run a CP test: Complete a 9-minute all-out effort, and the Stryd App automatically calculates your Critical Power
  4. Set power zones: The Stryd App automatically sets six power zones based on your CP
  5. Start with long runs: Practice using power to control pace during easy long runs first

Practical Tips

  • Beginners are advised to start with “using power as a pacing guide” rather than needing to understand all zones immediately
  • During Taiwan’s hot summer runs, heart rate runs high due to thermoregulation; using power instead of heart rate better reflects true training intensity
  • Stryd’s sensor contacts need regular cleaning to prevent corrosion from sweat and salt
  • Stryd placement varies between different shoes and affects data; it’s recommended to keep it on the same pair of training shoes
