To effectively break through a plateau, you must first correctly diagnose the root cause.

  2. Strokes per 25 meters: Measured at a fixed intensity; ideally, the more you train, the fewer strokes needed at the same speed. If stroke count doesn’t decrease over time, it means pull efficiency or stroke length hasn’t improved.

  3. Glide distance off the wall: How far you can glide after a turn without actively swimming. This indicator reflects streamline quality—good streamlining is the most direct way to reduce drag.

Video diagnosis of common technical flaws:
It’s recommended to film above-water (drone) and underwater swimming videos once a month, comparing them with footage from 3 months ago to identify:

  • Whether hand entry position has improved the “slicing in” problem
  • Whether the pull path is complete (from entry to pushing past the thigh)
  • Whether body roll amplitude is sufficient (45 degrees is the standard)

3. Training Load Adjustment Strategies

When technical diagnosis reveals no obvious issues, adjusting training load may be the key to breaking through a plateau.

Ways to break through training adaptation:

  • Increase intensity (not distance): If you’ve been training at moderate intensity long-term (5,000 to 6,000 meters daily, heart rate at 140 to 150) with stagnant times, try reducing training distance (shorten to 3,000 to 4,000 meters) but adding more high-intensity sprints (200 to 300 meters at maximum effort each)

  3. Change race strategy rather than outcome goals: Design new race strategies in training (such as a more aggressive final sprint), letting “trying a new strategy” replace the mental framework of “must break the record”


5. Assessing Physical Recovery

If technique, training volume, and psychological factors are ruled out, insufficient recovery may also be a hidden cause of a plateau:

  • Morning resting heart rate: If it’s consistently more than 5 beats above your personal baseline, it indicates inadequate recovery
  • Sleep quality: 7 to 9 hours of high-quality sleep each night is the foundation for athletic progress
  • Nutrition management: Ensure protein (20 to 25 grams) and carbohydrates are consumed within 30 minutes after training to promote muscle repair

6. A Systematic Process for Breaking Through Plateaus

  1. Identify the plateau (performance stagnant for more than 6 to 8 weeks)
  2. Diagnose the cause (technique/training/psychology/recovery)
  3. Make targeted adjustments (change one variable at a time, don’t modify multiple factors simultaneously)
  4. Observe the response for 4 to 6 weeks
  5. If ineffective, diagnose the next possible cause
