Introduction: E-Bikes Are More Than Just “Bicycles with a Motor”

Taiwan’s E-Bike market is heating up. From commuting to mountain riding, more and more people are choosing electric-assist bicycles. But many people maintain their E-Bikes like ordinary bicycles—washing the bike and applying some lube is considered enough.

The problem is that E-Bikes add two of the most expensive components: the battery and the motor. A battery costs NT$15,000-30,000, and a motor costs NT$10,000-25,000. If not maintained properly, the lifespan of these components will be significantly reduced.

E-Bike Battery Basics

Battery Types

Currently, almost all E-Bikes use lithium-ion batteries (Li-ion), which come in two main chemistries:

Special note for Taiwan: Summer temperatures in Taiwan frequently exceed 35°C. Don’t park your E-Bike in direct sunlight! The temperature inside a car trunk can reach 60°C, so absolutely never leave the battery inside a car.

Rule Three: Proper Charging Habits

  1. Use the original charger: Third-party chargers may have mismatched voltage
  2. Charge in a ventilated area: The battery warms up slightly during charging
  3. Don’t charge near flammable materials: Although rare, batteries carry a fire risk
  4. Unplug the charger after charging is complete: Avoid overcharging
  5. Don’t charge immediately after riding: Wait 30 minutes for the battery to cool down

Rule Four: Long-Term Storage

If you won’t be riding for more than two weeks:

  1. Charge the battery to 50-60%
  2. Remove it from the frame (if detachable)
  3. Store in a cool, dry place (15-25°C)
  4. Check the charge level once a month; if it drops below 20%, top it up to 50%
  5. Don’t store it in a basement (Taiwan basements are usually very humid)

  5. Don’t use maximum assist on steep slopes for extended periods: The motor can overheat

Special Notes for Mid-Drive Motors

Mid-drive motors transmit power through the chain, so:

  • Chain wears faster: Recommended to replace the chain every 2000-3000 km
  • Cassette wears faster: 30-50% faster than on ordinary bicycles
  • Chainrings may have proprietary specifications: Requires brand-specific chainrings
  • Reduce power output when shifting: Pedal lightly or stop pedaling at the moment of shifting to reduce impact on the drivetrain

Electrical System Maintenance

Display/Controller

  1. Turn off the power when not in use (saves the battery and extends display lifespan)
  2. Clean the surface with a slightly damp cloth
  3. Don’t use chemical cleaners
  4. Update firmware regularly (if the brand provides updates)
  5. Protect the display from impacts

Sensors

  • Cadence sensor/Torque sensor: Keep clean, confirm the magnet (if any) is positioned correctly
  • Speed sensor: Same maintenance as on ordinary bicycles
  • Brake sensors: Confirm the motor actually cuts off when braking

  3. Cover the battery port with a plastic cap
  4. Confirm all connectors are dry after washing
  5. Wipe battery contacts with a dry cloth regularly

Practical Advice for E-Bike Riders in Taiwan

  1. Park in the shade in summer: Batteries hate heat, and Taiwan summers are very hot
  2. Dry the bike after riding in the rain: Pay special attention to the battery connection port
  3. Find a shop that can service electric bikes: Not every bike shop can repair E-Bikes
  4. Register your warranty: Complete the warranty registration immediately after buying the bike
  5. Keep a spare charger at the office: Commuters can charge at work
