
Training for Short, Steep Climbs (<3min): Anaerobic Capacity and Sprint Power
Many segments in Taiwan or Strava KOMs are 1–3 minute short, steep climbs: Elephant Mountain summit, the steep section of Muzha Zhinan Temple, and various short, steep urban bridges. Performance on these climbs has almost nothing to do with FTP; it relies on anaerobic capacity and peak power.
This article addresses the need for “short-duration maximal output” with training plans and physiological theory.
1. Energy Systems for Short Climbs
Short, steep climbs (30sec – 3min) involve a mix of three energy systems:

FTP training can barely improve the first three zones.
2. Anaerobic Capacity
Anaerobic capacity = the ability to produce large amounts of ATP without oxygen over a short period, relying primarily on the glycolytic system (glucose → lactate + ATP).
Physiological characteristics:
- Rapid lactate accumulation (can reach 15–20 mmol/L)
- Heart rate spikes to 95–100% HRmax
- Muscle soreness 24–48hr after training
- Training benefits plateau after about 4–6 weeks
3. Anaerobic Capacity Training Plans
Workout A: 60–90sec High-Intensity Intervals
- 8×60sec @ 150% FTP (4min rest)
- 6×90sec @ 140% FTP (5min rest)
- 10×45sec @ 170% FTP (3min rest)
Key points:
- Rest must be sufficient (work-to-rest ratio of 1:3 or more)
- A noticeable drop in power over the last 2 reps is normal
- The feeling of lactate accumulation before and after training is necessary
Workout B: 30sec All-Out Sprints
- 8–10 × 30sec all-out (4min rest)
- Best done on a real 8–12% gradient
Key points:
- Don’t watch power; go purely all-out
- The 1st rep might be 1200W, and the 8th rep dropping to 800W is normal
- Trains the “maximization” of the glycolytic system
Workout C: Pyramid (Combined Anaerobic)
- 15sec / 30sec / 60sec / 90sec / 60sec / 30sec / 15sec
- Intensity in order: 180% / 160% / 140% / 130% / 140% / 160% / 180%
- Rest = effort duration × 2
4. Sprint Power (Peak Power)
Peak power = the maximum power achievable within 5 seconds, relying primarily on the phosphocreatine system and neuromuscular recruitment.
Typical values (cycling):
- Amateur riders: 800–1200W (10–14 W/kg)
- Professional stage racers: 1400–1800W
- Sprint specialists: 1800–2400W (Cavendish ~1800W, Sagan ~1600W)
5. Sprint Training Plans
Workout A: Standing Sprints
- 8×6sec all-out from 25 km/h (5min rest)
- Standing position, big gear (53×11 or 14)
- Best on a 4–6% climb
Key points:
- Push power to its maximum within 6 seconds
- It’s not about “spinning fast” but “pushing hard”
- Trains neuromuscular recruitment rate
Workout B: Seated Starts
- 6×10sec all-out from 0 km/h (seated, starting from a standstill)
- Big gear, explosive start
- Trains the phosphocreatine system + starting strength
Workout C: High-Speed Sprints
- 4×15sec all-out from 35 km/h (10min rest)
- Trains power output at high speed
- Simulates a final sprint scenario
6. Periodization
4-week short-climb specialization block:

Notes:
- Maximum 2–3 high-intensity anaerobic sessions per week
- Insert aerobic base training in between to maintain cardiovascular fitness
- Warm up and cool down thoroughly before and after training
7. Supplement: Neuromuscular Training
Power on short, steep climbs also involves the nervous system:
- Explosive strength (weights): squat jump, power clean
- Plyometrics: box jump, broad jump
- Unilateral training: single-leg squat, single-leg deadlift
Do 1–2 strength sessions per week, 30–45 minutes each, combined with on-bike training for the best results.
8. Conclusion
The outcome on short, steep climbs is not about how high your FTP is, but how strong your anaerobic capacity and peak power are. If your FTP is 290W but your 1-minute power is only 400W, you’ll get dropped on a 2-minute steep climb by a rider with a 270W FTP but a 480W 1-minute power. With 4–6 weeks of targeted training, your short-climb performance can improve by 10–20 seconds—something FTP training can’t deliver.
