Introduction: The Harder You Train in Winter, the More Your Bike Needs Care

While Taiwan’s winters don’t bring snow (well, Hehuan Mountain occasionally does), the cold rain and gloomy weather brought by the northeast monsoon lead many cyclists to spend their winter training season on a trainer at home.

After a winter of training, your FTP might have improved by 20 watts, but if you haven’t paid attention to maintenance, your bike might have also “improved” into several problems requiring repairs. That’s because riding on a trainer affects your bike completely differently than riding outdoors.

On a trainer, there’s no wind to evaporate the sweat, so all of it will:

  • Drip onto the stem and top tube

  • Sustained high-wattage output: Continuous stress can cause fatigue

  • Do not use wheel-on trainers with carbon fiber frames

Direct-Drive Trainers

Direct-drive trainers have less impact on the frame, but:

Drivetrain Maintenance for Winter Training

Chain

Chain wear patterns on a trainer differ from outdoor riding:

  • But sustained high load → Stretching may accelerate
  • Sweat may drip onto the chain → Corrosion

  • Clean and lube once every 2 weeks
  • Use dry or wax-based chain lube (no worry about washing off indoors)

Cassette and Chainrings

  • On a trainer, you typically only use the middle few cogs
  • These cogs will wear faster than the others
  • After winter training ends, check the most frequently used cogs

Trainer-Specific Cassette

If using a direct-drive trainer:

  • It’s recommended to install a dedicated cassette
  • Don’t share it with your outdoor riding cassette
  • You can use a cheaper cassette
  • Avoid frequent cassette removal/installation (which can damage the threads)

Other Winter Training Maintenance Priorities

Seatpost and Saddle

During prolonged high-intensity training:

  • Saddle wear accelerates (no time spent out of the saddle)
  • The seatpost may corrode from sweat (especially aluminum posts in aluminum frames)
  • Periodically remove the seatpost to inspect it

Headset

The headset is where sweat most easily flows into during winter training:

  • The headset must be serviced after winter training ends
  • Disassemble, clean, and re-grease
  • If the bearings are already corroded, they need replacement

Bar Tape

Bar tape lifespan on a trainer is usually much shorter than outdoors:

  • Sweat soaking causes deterioration
  • Sustained pressure from hands in a fixed position
  • Almost always needs replacement after winter training
  • Consider using cheaper bar tape for trainer riding

Bolt Maintenance

All exposed bolts on the frame need extra attention during winter training:

  1. Bottle cage bolts: Frequently dripped on by sweat
  2. Stem bolts: A sweat hotspot
  3. Seatpost clamp bolts: May seize due to sweat
  4. Brake/shift lever bolts: In direct contact with hand sweat

Protection Measures: Apply a thin layer of anti-seize grease or petroleum jelly to bolt heads.

  • Used aluminum frame
  • Basic groupset (doesn’t need to be high-end)
  • Cheap bar tape (it gets replaced often anyway)
  • Comfortable saddle (long training sessions)
  • Power meter (if budget allows)

Special Considerations for Winter Training in Taiwan

  1. Dehumidification: Taiwan’s winter humidity is high; run a dehumidifier after training
  2. Ventilation: Indoor training requires good airflow
  3. Floor protection: Sweat dripping on the floor also needs cleaning up
  4. Noise: Taiwan’s apartment buildings are dense; be mindful of trainer noise and training hours
  5. Electricity costs: Fan + air conditioning + trainer—winter electricity bills may be higher than summer

Winter training is the golden period for building fitness, but don’t neglect bike maintenance just because you’re only riding indoors.
