Mini Taper for Back-to-Back Races: Managing a 4–8 Week Gap
Many runners in the autumn marathon season pair “Berlin + Frankfurt,” or domestically “Taipei Marathon + Kaohsiung Marathon.” With only 4–8 weeks in between, you can’t simply apply the 3-week taper template.
Two Key Questions for Back-to-Back Races
- Recovery from the first race: After a marathon, full recovery takes 14–21 days
- Tapering for the second race: This requires another 10–14 days
If the two races are 4 weeks apart (28 days): 14 + 14 = 28 days, leaving zero room for training.
Strategies for Different Race Gaps
4-Week Gap (28 Days)
This is the limit—aiming for a PB in both races is unrealistic; at least one race should be treated as “for enjoyment.”
| Phase | Duration | Content |
|---|---|---|
| Post-Race Recovery | Day 1–10 | 7 days of complete rest + 3 days of easy jogging |
| Transition | Day 11–18 | Light training (30–40K per week) |
| Second Race Mini Taper | Day 19–28 | 10-day taper |
Second race goal: Running 2–5% slower than the first race is the norm
6-Week Gap (42 Days)
A more reasonable arrangement—you can push for a good result in both races.
| Phase | Duration | Content |
|---|---|---|
| Post-Race Recovery | Day 1–14 | 5 days of complete rest + gradual return to training |
| Maintenance Training | Day 15–28 | Moderate intensity (50–60K per week) |
| Second Race Mini Taper | Day 29–42 | 14-day taper |
8-Week Gap (56 Days)
Relatively generous—you can go for a PB in the second race.
| Phase | Duration | Content |
|---|---|---|
| Post-Race Recovery | Day 1–14 | Same as above |
| Consolidation Training | Day 15–35 | Includes 2 medium-long runs + 1 interval session |
| Second Race Taper | Day 36–56 | Full 3-week taper |
The Critical 10 Days of Post-Race Recovery
Recovery after a marathon determines whether you can race again:
Day 1–3: Complete Rest
- Walk 20–30 minutes / day
- Hydrate heavily, replenish protein
- Avoid deep-tissue massage (muscles are in the inflammatory phase)
Day 4–7: Light Activity
- Swimming / cycling (non-impact)
- No running
- Begin light massage / foam rolling
Day 8–10: Return to Running
- Start with 4–6K at E pace
- Keep heart rate no higher than Z2
- Don’t rush into long runs
Mid-Phase Transition Training (6-Week Version Example)
With a 6-week gap, the key 2 weeks are Day 15–28:
Day 15–21 (First Transition Week)
| Day | Workout |
|---|---|
| Mon | Rest |
| Tue | Run 8K E + 4×400m @ 5K pace |
| Wed | Run 6K E |
| Thu | Run 10K (including 5K @ MP) |
| Fri | Rest / cross-training |
| Sat | Rest |
| Sun | Run 18K (including 8K @ MP) |
Day 22–28 (Second Transition Week)
| Day | Workout |
|---|---|
| Mon | Rest |
| Tue | Run 10K (including 3×1.6K @ T-pace) |
| Wed | Run 6K E |
| Thu | Run 12K (including 6K @ MP) |
| Fri | Rest |
| Sat | Run 6K E |
| Sun | Run 20K (including 10K @ MP) |
Second Race Mini Taper (10–14 Days)
Example Mini Taper for a 4-week gap (Day 19–28):
| Day | Distance | Intensity |
|---|---|---|
| -10 | 14K | Including 6K @ MP |
| -9 | 6K | E |
| -8 | Rest | — |
| -7 | 10K | Including 3×1.6K T |
| -6 | 6K | E |
| -5 | 8K | Including 4K @ MP |
| -4 | 4K | E + strides |
| -3 | 6K | Including 2K @ MP |
| -2 | 4K | E + strides |
| -1 | 3K | Leg opener |
| 0 | Race | — |
Strategy Recommendations for Back-to-Back Races
- Conservative first race, push in the second: Run the first race at 95% effort, save 5% for recovery
- Push in the first race, conservative second: Go all-out for a PB in the first, treat the second as an LSD
- Moderate effort in both: Suitable for veterans of back-to-back racing, but abandon PB goals
Red Flags for Back-to-Back Races
Consider skipping the second race in the following situations:
- 7 days after the first race, resting heart rate is still more than 10 bpm above normal
- HRV continues to decline during the second race taper
- Any persistent muscle soreness / joint pain
- Sleep quality declines for 2 consecutive weeks
Conclusion
Back-to-back racing is a luxury game for advanced runners—the body is not an unlimited resource; you need to distinguish the primary race from the secondary one. With gaps shorter than 8 weeks, running the second race slower than the first is the norm—it’s not a decline, but your body’s reminder.
