The Correct Half-Marathon Pacing Framework

Using a 1:35 target (4:30/km) as an example:

0-3K: Restraint

  • Pace: 4:38/km (8 sec/km slower than target)
  • Reminder: When your watch beeps, glance at it but don’t panic

3-10K: Stability

  • Pace: 4:30/km (target pace)
  • Heart rate: max 85-87%
  • Don’t let runners passing you dictate your rhythm

10-17K: Execution

  • Pace: 4:28/km (slightly negative split)
  • Heart rate: max 87-89%

17-21K: Leave It All Out There

  • Pace: below 4:25/km
  • Heart rate: above max 90%
  • The final 1K can be run at 4:15

Pace Watch Usage Recommendations

Never look at “instant pace” during a half marathon. GPS instant pace has an error of ±15 seconds, which will tempt you into constant corrections.

Correct settings:

  • Lap pace: Auto-lap every 1K, check the average of the previous kilometer
  • Overall average: Serves as an early warning for the “spiral”
  • Heart rate ceiling: Alert at max 90% (should not be exceeded in the first 15K)
