
Criterium Race Tactics: 60 Minutes, 80 Laps of Corners and Repeated Accelerations
The criterium is the craziest format in bike racing: 1 km lap length, 80 laps, 60 minutes, average speed 45 km/h, 4-6 corners per lap. During the race you will perform 300-500 accelerations—this is the ultimate test of RSA (Repeated Sprint Ability).
Basic Characteristics of Criteriums
- Total distance: 60-100 km
- Number of laps: 50-100 laps
- Lap length: 800 meters - 2 km
- Corners: 4-8 per lap
- Average speed: 40-50 km/h
- Race duration: 60-90 minutes
Power Profile: Many Peaks, High Average
Unlike road races, the power distribution in a criterium is very “sawtooth-shaped”:

Cornering Technique: The Key to Winning
Calculating Cornering Speed
Maximum cornering speed = √(friction coefficient × gravity × corner radius)
= √(0.8 × 9.8 × 10) ≈ 8.9 m/s ≈ 32 km/h
For a corner with a 10-meter radius, the theoretical maximum is 32 km/h. But in practice:
- Dry road, good tires → can push up to 40 km/h
- Sandy or wet road → drop to 28 km/h
Standard Cornering Sequence
- Brake: 20 meters before the corner, slow from 50 km/h to 35 km/h (use the rear brake primarily)
- Enter the corner: Lean your body inward, outside pedal down (toward the ground)
- Through the corner: Stop pedaling (pedals at the 3 o’clock/9 o’clock position)
- Exit the corner: Start pedaling, move from the outside to the inside
- Accelerate: Within 5 seconds after the exit, go all out at 600-800 W
The Importance of Cornering Skill
If you lose 1 second per corner, 80 laps × 4 corners = 320 seconds = 5 minutes 20 seconds.
A rider who corners slowly simply cannot win a criterium.
Corner-Exit Acceleration: 700 W for 60 Seconds
The most exhausting part of a criterium: you have to re-accelerate after every corner.
- Entering the corner: 50 km/h → 35 km/h
- Exiting the corner: 35 km/h → 50 km/h, requiring 5 seconds at 700-900 W
- 4 corners per lap = 4 sprints per lap
- 80 laps = 320 sprints
This is why criterium riders need Repeated Sprint Ability (RSA) training.
Positioning Strategy
Position in the Race
- Ideal position: Top 10
- Dangerous position: 30th or worse (you get dropped at every corner exit and have to chase hard)
- Fatal position: The very back (you risk getting “lapped” a full lap)
When to Move Up
- Straight sections: You can pass on the outside to move up
- Corners: Never overtake (extremely high risk)
- Acceleration zone after corners: Best time to fight for position
Attacks and Breakaways
Breakaway Success Rate in Criteriums
In a criterium, the success rate of a solo breakaway is under 5%. Reasons:
- Short laps mean the pack can catch up quickly
- Corners “compress” the pack’s distance
- The pack has a drafting advantage
When Is a Breakaway Effective?
- Late in the race (last 20 laps) when everyone is tired
- On sections with a slight downhill
- When the pack is fighting among itself or distracted
Final Sprint: The Last 3 Laps
The criterium finish sprint is chaotic:
- Last 3 laps: Pack speed rises to 55+ km/h
- Last lap: Every corner is a fight for survival
- Final 200 meters: Straight-line sprint
Sprinter Positioning Strategy
- 2nd-to-last lap: Fight your way into the top 5
- Last lap: Hold 3rd-5th position
- Final corner: Choose your inside/outside line
- Final straight: Launch your sprint
Training Plan: 60-Minute RSA
Plan 1: Criterium Simulation
- Venue: Track or closed loop
- Setup: 1 sprint of 12 seconds every minute, remaining 48 seconds at FTP
- Duration: 60 minutes
- Once per week
Plan 2: Corner-Exit Acceleration
- Venue: Training route with corners
- Setup: After each corner, sprint all out for 10 seconds; go slow before the corner
- Practice the coordination of cornering and acceleration
Plan 3: Lactate Tolerance
- Setup: FTP × 1.1 for 5 minutes + 30-second sprint, repeat 5 sets
- Train sprint power under prolonged high intensity
Essential Gear for Criteriums
- Frame: Stiff and agile (not a TT bike)
- Wheels: Stiff tubulars, low-profile aero (no need for very deep sections)
- Tires: Prioritize grip (cornering safety > rolling resistance)
- Gloves: Essential (high crash risk)
- Helmet: Essential and must be fastened securely
Conclusion
The criterium is the most spectator-friendly format in bike racing—speed, skill, tactics, and heart, all are indispensable. If your FTP isn’t top-tier but you have good cornering technique and strong explosive power, the criterium is the event where you’ll most easily reach the podium.
