Max Strength Phase: Why You Should Train at 85%+ 1RM

What Is the Max Strength Phase?

The Max Strength Phase is a core stage in strength periodization, with the goal of pushing your “absolute strength” to your personal peak. The key in this phase is not about getting bigger, but about training the “nervous system.”

Why Must It Be 85%+ 1RM?

The Threshold for Neural Adaptation

Research shows that to significantly improve exercise economy, strength training must exceed 80% 1RM. Only above 85% can you truly trigger the following adaptations:

  1. Maximal Motor Unit Recruitment: Including Type IIx fast-twitch muscle fibers
  2. Rate Coding: Increased neuronal firing frequency
  3. Intermuscular Coordination
  4. Reduced Inhibitory Reflexes (decreased Golgi Tendon inhibition)

Why You Won’t “Get Bigger”

With low-rep, high-intensity training of 3–5 reps × 5 sets, total training volume is low and hypertrophy signals are weak. The primary adaptations are neural, not in muscle fiber size.

Sample Program (for Cyclists)

Exercise Sets × Reps Intensity Rest
Back Squat 5 × 4 87% 1RM 4 minutes
Romanian Deadlift (RDL) 4 × 5 85% 1RM 3 minutes
Pull-Up (weighted) 4 × 5 Bodyweight +20kg 3 minutes
Dumbbell Single-Leg Deadlift 3 × 5 / leg Heavy 2 minutes
Plank 3 × 60 seconds 60 seconds

Total duration: 60–75 minutes

Important Safety Principles

  1. Warm up thoroughly: 3 progressive warm-up sets (50% / 70% / 80% 1RM × 3 reps)
  2. Form comes first: Better to lower the weight than to compromise technique
  3. Spotter: Have someone spot you for squats and bench presses
  4. Don’t train to failure on every set: Leave 1–2 reps in reserve (RPE 8–9)
  5. No high-intensity exercise within 24 hours after training

Advanced: How to Test 1RM?

Directly testing 1RM carries high risk; it’s recommended to estimate it from your 5RM:

1RM ≈ 5RM weight × 1.15

For example, if your 5RM squat is 100kg, your 1RM is approximately 115kg, so your 85% training weight would be ~98kg.

How Long Does It Last?

6–8 weeks per cycle. After 8 weeks, neural adaptations tend to plateau, and it’s time to transition to the Power phase or move into Maintenance.

Conclusion

The Max Strength Phase is the key for endurance athletes to go from “moderately strong” to “truly strong.” With 8 weeks of dedicated effort, your climbing, sprinting, and wind resistance will be completely transformed.
