“Just finished 4×8-minute FTP intervals today—can I still train legs tonight?” “After a 30 km LSD run, can I lift weights tomorrow?” There is no single answer to these questions; it depends on training goals and recovery status.

Order Principles for Same-Day Training

If you must do both types of training on the same day, order matters:

Principle 1: Strength + Endurance on the Same Day

Strength first, then endurance (suitable when: strength is the primary goal)

  • Pros: The nervous system is most alert, and strength training quality is high
  • Cons: Subsequent endurance training quality declines

Endurance first, then strength (suitable when: endurance is the primary goal)

  • Pros: Endurance training quality is high
  • Cons: Strength training quality declines by 30–50%

Principle 2: At Least 6 Hours Between the Two Sessions

Research shows that after a 6–9 hour interval between sessions for the same muscle group, force output in the second session can recover to 85–95%.

Strength Training After High-Intensity Endurance Work

Not Recommended: Leg Training Within 24 Hours After High-Intensity Endurance

For example:

  • Tuesday: VO2max 5×5-minute intervals
  • Wednesday: Do not immediately do maximal strength squats
