Indoor Training Heat Management Tactics: Fan Placement, Towel Setup, and Hydration Rhythm Complete Guide

Why It’s So Hot Indoors

When riding outdoors at 30km/h, natural airflow evaporates 60% of your metabolic heat. Indoors, the bike doesn’t move and the air is still, so all that heat builds up on you:

  • Core temperature rises 1°C, heart rate increases 7-10 bpm
  • Ambient temperature rises from 20°C to 28°C, FTP power drops 8-12%
  • Sweating loses 1% of body weight, power output drops 2-3%

Fan Setup: Two Is Basic, Three Is Advanced

Setup 1: Basic Dual-Fan (Sufficient for 90% of Riders)

[In front of rider] Large fan 1 (floor industrial fan, 20-inch)
↓ Blows directly at chest and face
[45° behind rider's left] Medium fan (desk fan, 12-inch)
↓ Blows on back and thighs
  • Front fan: wind speed 3-5 m/s, simulating 15-20km/h riding airflow
  • Side fan: dries back sweat, accelerating evaporation

Setup 2: Pro-Level Triple-Fan

Add a floor fan blowing on the leg muscles from under the bike to keep muscle temperature below 38°C and prevent cramping.

Fan Buying Guide

Level Airflow (m³/min) Budget
Entry 30-50 NT$ 600-1200
Advanced (industrial fan) 80-120 NT$ 2000-3500
Flagship (Wahoo Headwind) Auto-syncs with heart rate NT$ 8000+

Towels: Not Decoration, But a Necessity

  1. Handlebar towel: absorbs sweat + protects carbon handlebars (sweat contains salt that corrodes the paint)
  2. Head and neck towel: wipe face, back of neck, and elbow pits every 15 minutes
  3. Bike frame cover (Trainer Sweat Cover): covers the top tube + head tube to prevent sweat from dripping into bearings

Sweat has a pH of 5.5 and contains sodium chloride, which corrodes aluminum and ages carbon fiber adhesive surfaces.

Hydration Rhythm: A Scientific Formula

Base formula: 150-250ml every 15 minutes

Intensity Ambient Temp Hydration per Hour
Recovery Z1-Z2 20°C 500-700ml
Endurance Z3 22°C 700-900ml
Threshold Z4 24°C 900-1200ml
VO2max Z5 26°C 1000-1400ml

What to Hydrate With

  • < 60min: plain water is enough
  • 60-90min: water + electrolyte tablets (sodium 300-500mg/L)
  • > 90min: water + electrolytes + carbs (30-60g/h)

Room Temperature Settings

Ideal: 18-22°C, humidity < 60%.

  • Above 24°C → turn on AC or increase fan power
  • Below 16°C → warm-up needs more time (20min+)
  • Humidity > 70% → turn on dehumidifier, otherwise sweat can’t evaporate

Pre- and Post-Training Checklist

  • Before training: weigh yourself
  • After training: weigh yourself and calculate fluid loss
  • Loss > 2%: strengthen your hydration strategy

Get your cooling right, and your indoor FTP can reach 95% of your outdoor level.
