
What is RPE
RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion) is Borg’s subjective exercise intensity scale:

Differences in RPE Between Indoor and Outdoor
Below is a comparison of RPE at the same 95% FTP (Threshold):

Indoor RPE is generally 1-2 levels higher than outdoor RPE.
Why Indoor Feels So Hard
Factor 1: Heat Stress (30% Contribution)
- No headwind for cooling
- Core temperature rises quickly
- Heart rate drift
Factor 2: Mental Monotony (25% Contribution)
- Outdoor scenery changes distract attention
- Indoor single view amplifies fatigue
Factor 3: Lack of Coasting (20% Contribution)
- Outdoor descents, momentum, red lights
- Indoor continuous pedaling with no recovery
Factor 4: Poor Muscle Activation (15% Contribution)
- Outdoor road vibration activates upper body core
- Indoor upper body is stiff, increasing lower limb load
Factor 5: Lack of Visual Speed Sensation (10% Contribution)
- Outdoor 40 km/h vs 30 km/h feels different
- Indoor has no speed feedback
RPE Calibration: Establish Two Standards
Professional approach: Indoor RPE and outdoor RPE should be recorded separately:

Using RPE for Training Decisions
Scenario 1: Insufficient Warm-Up
- RPE is high in the first 5 minutes (4 becomes 6)
- Solution: Extend warm-up, turn on a fan
Scenario 2: Heart Rate Drift
- RPE stays the same but heart rate keeps rising
- Solution: Improve cooling, hydrate
Scenario 3: RPE Lower Than Expected
- A workout expected to be RPE 8 only feels like 6
- Possible causes: trainer measuring low, good mental state, just ate
Scenario 4: RPE Higher Than Expected
- A workout expected to be RPE 7 feels like 9
- Possible causes: accumulated fatigue, early signs of illness, room temperature too high
Calibration Process: 3 Methods
Method 1: Comparison Test
- Same morning, do 20 min @ 90% FTP outdoors
- Next day at the same time, do the same workout indoors
- Record both RPE, heart rate, and sensations
Method 2: Heart Rate Mapping
- At the same power, record heart rate
- Indoor heart rate is 5-10 bpm higher than outdoor
- Use heart rate to back-calculate RPE calibration
Method 3: Completion Rate Assessment
- Workout plan completion rate
- Indoor often can’t complete workouts that are doable outdoors
- Accept a 5-10% power discount
Mistakes to Avoid
Mistake 1: Pushing Through to RPE 10
- Fatigue accumulates quickly
- High risk of overtraining
- A workout meant for RPE 7-8 pushed to 10 → intensity is set wrong
Mistake 2: Ignoring High RPE Warning Signs
- RPE abnormally high for 3 consecutive days
- Could be overtraining or early signs of a cold
- Proactively reduce intensity or rest
Mistake 3: Judging Indoor by Outdoor RPE Standards
- Indoor feeling of 8 = outdoor 7
- Don’t conclude “indoor training is harder than outdoor”
Advanced: RPE + Heart Rate + Power Triangle Calibration

Heart rate: 165 bpm
RPE: 7.5
Environment: Indoor 22°C, dual fans
Sensation: Breathing hard from the third interval, can hold on
Long-term data can accurately predict your training load.
RPE is the cheapest and most important training tool. Learning to calibrate it is more useful than spending NT$30,000 on a trainer upgrade.
