Bikepacking Bike Selection: Gravel, Hardtail MTB, Touring Bike Comparison

Three Mainstream Bikepacking Bike Types

The core question when choosing a bikepacking bike is: “What roads will you ride?” This determines whether you should choose a Gravel, Hardtail MTB, or Touring Bike. Each bike type has a clearly defined optimal use case.

Gravel: The Most Versatile Choice

Gravel bikes are the most popular bikepacking bike type in recent years, with geometry sitting between road bikes and off-road bikes. Characteristics:

  • Drop bars offer multiple hand positions for long-distance comfort
  • 38-50c wide tires balance paved-road efficiency and gravel grip
  • 1x drivetrain simplifies shifting and saves weight
  • Usually features multiple bottle cage mounts

Best for: Riders whose routes are 80% paved or gravel, with occasional easy singletrack
Taiwan scenarios: Round-island tours, Northern Cross-Island Highway, Wuling, gravel forest roads
Recommended models: Specialized Diverge, Trek Checkpoint, Salsa Cutthroat

Hardtail MTB: The First Choice for Off-Road

Hardtail mountain bikes (front suspension, rigid rear) are the best choice for technical bikepacking. Characteristics:

  • 100-120mm front suspension absorbs vibration
  • 2.1-2.4" wide tires provide strong grip
  • Wide bars offer good control and stability on technical sections
  • 1x12 drivetrain with wide gear range (10-52T)

Best for: Riders whose routes are 50% or more singletrack or rough gravel
Taiwan scenarios: Central Mountain Range forest roads, Nenggao Cross-Ridge Trail, Batongguan
Recommended models: Salsa Fargo, Surly Krampus, Trek 1120

Touring Bike: Heavy-Load Long-Distance Expedition

Touring bikes are traditional long-distance bikes designed for multi-day heavy-load riding. Characteristics:

  • Steel or titanium frame, comfortable and durable
  • Multiple rack mounts (front and rear + triangle + fork)
  • Longer wheelbase for stability under heavy loads
  • Usually equipped with 3x drivetrain for fine gear steps

Best for: Riders whose routes are 80% or more paved, cross-country round-the-world trips, or those needing to carry extensive gear
Taiwan scenarios: Round-island tours + surrounding offshore islands, East Coast scenic route
Recommended models: Surly Long Haul Trucker, Salsa Marrakesh, Kona Sutra

How to Choose

Ask yourself three questions:

  1. Terrain composition: What’s the ratio of paved vs gravel vs singletrack?
  2. Load requirements: Bringing your own tent and sleeping bag vs staying in guesthouses?
  3. Budget: NT$ 30,000 vs 60,000 vs 100,000+?

Decision tree:

  • 70% paved roads, no camping → Touring Bike
  • Mixed terrain, will camp, want versatility → Gravel
  • 50% off-road, will camp, seeking technical performance → Hardtail MTB

Modifying an Existing Bike

If budget is limited, your current bike can also be modified for bikepacking:

  • Road bike: Swap to 30-32c tires, add a handlebar bag and saddle bag, can handle light gravel
  • XC MTB: Firm up the suspension, swap to semi-slick tires, can handle paved to light off-road

But modifications have their limits. If you’re serious about bikepacking, it’s recommended to purchase a dedicated bike.

Key Upgrades

Regardless of which bike you choose, these three upgrades are worth investing in:

  1. Tubeless system: Saves 200g and reduces flat tire rates
  2. Hydraulic disc brakes: Critical for safety on loaded descents
  3. Carbon seatpost: Absorbs vibration, saves 50-100g
