The hormonal environment of male athletes is largely stable from day to day, but a female athlete’s body experiences the interplay of two curves—estrogen and progesterone—over 28 days. This is not a “condition issue” but a physiological fact—understanding it allows periodized training to truly align with your own body.

Physiological Differences Between the Two Main Phases

Follicular Phase: The Golden Window for High Intensity

Estrogen has an anabolic effect, promoting protein synthesis and glycogen storage, and enhancing neuromuscular efficiency. Research (Sims & Heather, 2018) shows that during the follicular phase:

  • 1RM strength is on average 7–11% higher
  • High-intensity interval tolerance is improved
  • Pain threshold is higher (estrogen enhances endogenous opioids)

Suggested scheduling: Strength testing, VO2max intervals, threshold runs, and high-intensity segments of long rides.

Luteal Phase: A Period of Steady State and Endurance

The rise in progesterone brings several key challenges:

  1. Core body temperature increases by 0.3–0.5°C: Heat dissipation efficiency drops when training in hot environments, raising the risk of heat illness
  2. Resting heart rate increases by 3–5 bpm: The same intensity feels harder
  3. Carbohydrate utilization decreases, fat utilization increases: High-intensity fuel efficiency worsens
  4. Protein breakdown increases: Higher protein intake is needed after training (1.8–2.2 g/kg)

Suggested scheduling: Low-intensity long-duration aerobic work, technique practice, swimming (good heat dissipation in water), and muscular endurance training.

Menstrual Phase: Don’t Over-Restrict

Many coaches recommend reducing training volume during menstruation, but in reality, adjustments can be made during the first 1–2 days if pain is severe. After that, as estrogen gradually rises, it is actually the starting point for the body’s recovery. Light aerobic exercise can promote uterine blood flow and relieve menstrual cramps.

Practical Periodization Recommendations

  • Menstrual tracking apps: FitrWoman, Wild.AI, Garmin Connect
  • Core body temperature monitoring: Morning measurements during the luteal phase can help predict ovulation
  • Combining HRV with the cycle: HRV typically drops 5–10% during the luteal phase, which is normal

Individual Variation Is the Real Truth

The above reflects “average” responses; in studies, about 30% of female athletes show weak cycle responses, and 10% show very strong ones. A 3-month training log plus cycle tracking is the true starting point for personalization. Don’t let a one-size-fits-all rule constrain your body.
