Development Sequence and Focus for the Four Strokes

Freestyle (Front Crawl): The Foundation of Water Feel and Efficiency

Every young swimmer should master freestyle first, as it provides the foundational water-feel training for all strokes. Key technical elements:

  • Body position: Head aligned with the spine; hips and feet should not sink
  • Kick rhythm: Driven from the hips; six-beat or four-beat kick depends on individual coordination
  • Breathing timing: The body should rotate enough during inhalation that the mouth only needs to be a few centimeters above the water to complete the breath

Backstroke: A Spine-Friendly Stroke

Backstroke places the least stress on the cervical and lumbar spine, making it especially suitable for young athletes with minor spinal issues. The technical focus is sustained core engagement and rhythmic alternating shoulder rotation out of the water.

Breaststroke: A Potential Threat to the Knee Joint

The breaststroke kick places significant stress on the medial collateral ligament (MCL) of the knee, and improper technique can easily lead to “breaststroker’s knee.” It is recommended that before age 14, breaststroke should not make up too large a proportion of training, and a qualified coach should carefully correct the kick direction.

Butterfly: Learned Last, Highest Risk

Butterfly places the greatest impact on the shoulder joints and lumbar spine. It should only be practiced systematically after freestyle technique is stable. Before age 12, large volumes of butterfly training should be avoided to prevent chronic rotator cuff injuries.

Common Injuries and Prevention

Swimmer’s Shoulder

This is the most common injury among young swimmers, caused by chronic excessive internal rotation of the shoulder joint. Prevention measures:

  • Add 2–3 sets of rotator cuff strengthening exercises per week (external rotation with resistance bands)
  • Ensure the hand entry point in freestyle is directly in front of the shoulder, avoiding “crossing the midline”
  • Have a coach review stroke technique each season

Breaststroker’s Knee

Incorrect breaststroke kicking causes medial knee stress. Prevention: correct the ankle eversion angle, ensuring the toes point outward before the kick.

Early Signs of Overtraining

  • Muscle soreness persisting beyond 48 hours
  • A noticeable decline in training pace with no identifiable cause
  • Poorer sleep quality and irritability
  • Loss of interest in swimming, or even avoidance behaviors

Ratio of Technical Training to Physical Training

A common mistake in youth swim teams is overemphasizing “distance swimming” while neglecting technique quality. It is recommended to adjust the ratio by age:

  • Before age 12: 60% technique, 40% conditioning
  • Ages 13–15: 40% technique, 60% conditioning
  • Age 16 and above: 30% technique, 70% conditioning (technique has been internalized)

“Ten thousand meters of bad technique is worse than three thousand meters of good technique”—this is a consensus among international swimming coaches.

Practical Recommendations

  1. Watch elite swimmers’ race footage with bilingual commentary: Let children imitate excellent technique and build correct movement templates
  2. Use underwater video: Many pools in Taiwan allow parents to use waterproof recording equipment; one video analysis session per season yields significant results
  3. Dry-land supplementary training: Resistance bands and core work should total at least 2 hours per week to effectively improve in-water efficiency
  4. Maintain communication with school teachers: If intensive training periods affect academic performance, proactively adjust the training plan
