How to Choose the Correct Setback

Step 1: Understand Your Frame’s Seat Tube Angle

Find the Seat Tube Angle (STA) in your frame geometry chart:

  • STA > 74°: The frame is already more forward-oriented; you typically need a seatpost with setback
  • STA 72-74°: Standard range; a standard setback seatpost works
  • STA < 72°: The frame is more rearward-oriented; a zero-setback seatpost may be suitable

Step 2: KOPS Preliminary Test

  1. Sit on the bike with the pedal at the 3 o’clock position
  2. Have someone use a plumb line (or a plumb-bob app on a phone) to measure down from the front of your knee
  3. Observe where the line falls relative to the pedal spindle
  4. Adjust the saddle fore-aft position based on the result

Step 3: Fine-Tuning

The saddle can usually be adjusted fore-aft along the rail clamp:

  • Slide forward = reduce setback
  • Slide backward = increase setback

  2. Tighten the seatpost clamp to the specified torque (usually 5-7 Nm)
  3. Do not exceed the minimum insertion mark
  4. Periodically remove and check for clamp marks

Aluminum Seatposts

  1. Apply a thin layer of anti-seize compound
  2. Periodically remove to confirm it hasn’t seized
  3. Be aware of galvanic corrosion when different metals contact (aluminum seatpost + carbon frame)

Minimum Insertion Mark

All seatposts have a “Minimum Insertion” mark:

  • The seatpost must not be inserted into the frame less than this mark
  • Violating this can cause the seatpost or frame to break
  • If the mark is visible outside the frame → your seatpost is too short or the frame is too large
