
What Is Training Periodization?
Training periodization is one of the most important concepts in competitive sports science. Its core idea is: different training stimuli are applied at different times, allowing the body to reach its peak competitive form at the right moment. For triathletes, it is impossible to sustain high-intensity training year-round, nor is it possible to do only easy aerobic work all year—periodization helps you do the right thing at the right time.
The Four Phases of the Annual Training Cycle

Base Phase (November–February): Patient Foundation Building
The base phase typically takes place during Taiwan’s winter. Training volume is high during this phase, but intensity is deliberately kept low. Many athletes find this phase boring and can’t resist pushing the intensity of every session—this is the most common and most dangerous mistake.
Goals of the base phase:
- Build cardiorespiratory endurance (raising the aerobic threshold)
- Improve swimming technique (stroke efficiency, breathing, turns)
- Build the musculoskeletal system’s tolerance to training
- Develop the habit and rhythm of weekly training
In this phase, “slow” is a strategy, not laziness. The core benefit of LSD (Long Slow Distance) lies in improving fat metabolism efficiency, paving the way for higher-intensity training later.
Build Phase (March–May): Quality Improvement
The build phase introduces higher-intensity training while maintaining training volume:
- Swimming: Interval sets (e.g., 8×200 meters), pace training
- Cycling: Lactate threshold intervals (e.g., 4×10 minutes), repeated hill climbs
- Running: Tempo runs (threshold pace for 20–30 minutes), long intervals (e.g., 5×1 kilometer)
- Brick training: At least one bike + run combination session per week
The build phase is the key window for fitness breakthroughs, and it is also the phase with the highest risk of overtraining. Fatigue scores in your training log need to be strictly monitored.
Race Phase (June–September): Peak Competition
Taiwan’s triathlon season is mainly concentrated from May to October. Training during the race phase has several distinctive features:
- Training volume decreases slightly while intensity remains high
- Introduce “simulation races”—training sessions completed at race pace covering distances close to race distance
- Begin tapering 2–3 weeks before race day
- Schedule at least 1 week of active recovery after each race before moving on to the next
If you have 3–4 target races in a year, it is recommended to select 1–2 A-races (full preparation) and 1–2 B-races (training races), to avoid disrupting your training rhythm by doing a full taper for every single race.
Recovery Phase (October–November): Recharge and Start Anew
The recovery phase after the season ends is the stage many athletes most easily overlook. After 8–10 months of training and racing, the body needs genuine rest:
- First 2 weeks: Almost no training, only easy walking or swimming
- Weeks 3–4: Easy aerobic activity, 3–4 sessions per week, 30–45 minutes each
- Weeks 5–6: Gradually return to structured training, entering the base phase of the next annual cycle
Training intensity drops during the recovery phase, but you should still “maintain regularity,” letting both body and mind know that the exercise habit will not disappear—it is simply temporarily slowing down.

Use an annual training log: Plan your full race schedule at the beginning of the year, mark A-races and B-races, and work backward from your A-races to determine the start dates of each phase.

Don’t skip the base phase: Many amateur athletes rush to increase intensity because the season is approaching, skipping the base phase and jumping straight into the build phase. Build-phase training without a foundation is like building a house on sand—it leads to injury and limited results.

Schedule a recovery week every 3–4 weeks: The “microcycles” within a phase also need planned recovery. After 3 weeks of training, schedule 1 low-volume week (reduce training volume by 30%) to support supercompensation and prevent overtraining.
