Final Pre-Race Bike Check: The 10-Minute SOP for Race Morning

Introduction: Don’t Let a Mechanical Issue Ruin Your Race

You’ve trained for three months, logged a thousand kilometers, watched your diet for two weeks, and couldn’t sleep the night before from nerves. You arrive at the venue on race morning, full of confidence—and then you discover your front tire is flat.

Or worse: your chain snaps mid-race, your derailleur fails on a critical climb, or your brakes give out before a descent. These are all problems that could have been prevented before the start.

This 10-minute pre-race SOP is the last line of defense between you and a DNS (Did Not Start) or DNF (Did Not Finish).

The 10-Minute SOP for Race Morning

Minutes 1-2: Wheels and Tire Pressure

Checklist:

  • [ ] Front and rear quick-release/through-axle tightened
  • [ ] Tire pressure correct (bring a pump to the venue!)
  • [ ] No foreign objects embedded in tire surface
  • [ ] No visible cracks or bulges on tires
  • [ ] Wheels spin smoothly with no wobble

Tire Pressure Recommendations (by weight and road surface):

Weight 25mm Tires 28mm Tires Tubeless
55-65kg 85-95 PSI 75-85 PSI 70-80 PSI
65-75kg 90-100 PSI 80-90 PSI 75-85 PSI
75-85kg 95-105 PSI 85-95 PSI 80-90 PSI
85kg+ 100-110 PSI 90-100 PSI 85-95 PSI

Minutes 3-4: Drivetrain

Checklist:

  • [ ] Chain well-lubricated (neither too dry nor too oily)
  • [ ] Turn the cranks; chain runs smoothly with no unusual noise
  • [ ] Shift through all gears from smallest to largest cassette sprocket
  • [ ] Shift from small to large chainring once
  • [ ] Quick-link confirmed secure
  • [ ] Rear derailleur hanger looks straight

Pre-Race Chain Care:

  • If using wax lubrication, no additional treatment needed before the race
  • If using oil lubrication, apply oil the day before and wipe off the exterior
  • Do not oil on race day itself (it will get on your hands and jersey)

Minutes 5-6: Brake System

Checklist:

  • [ ] Front brake: squeeze the lever, check lever feel is normal
  • [ ] Rear brake: squeeze the lever, check lever feel is normal
  • [ ] No sound of disc rotor rubbing against brake pads
  • [ ] Disc brake pad thickness sufficient
  • [ ] Rim brake pad thickness sufficient
  • [ ] Brake levers do not touch the handlebar (normal travel)

Important: If there is anything unusual with the brakes, do not race. Brake issues are fatal when descending at race speed.

Minutes 7-8: Frame and Body Contact Points

Checklist:

  • [ ] Stem bolts tightened (test by shaking the handlebar)
  • [ ] Saddle height correct (did you mark it?)
  • [ ] Seatpost clamp tightened
  • [ ] Saddle angle correct
  • [ ] Bike computer powered on, sensors paired properly
  • [ ] Bike computer battery sufficient
  • [ ] Heart rate strap (if used) paired
  • [ ] Power meter (if used) zeroed and calibrated

Minutes 9-10: Final Confirmation and Warm-Up

Checklist:

  • [ ] Race number attached correctly
  • [ ] Bottles filled (water + electrolytes)
  • [ ] Nutrition placed in jersey pockets
  • [ ] Spare tube/CO2 in saddle bag
  • [ ] Helmet fastened
  • [ ] Cleats confirmed

Warm-Up:

  • Ride 5-10 minutes at an easy pace
  • Do 2-3 short sprints (10 seconds)
  • Confirm all shifting and braking works properly under load

Nutrition Energy gels/bars, electrolytes

Common Race Mechanical Issues and Prevention

Issue Prevention On-Site Solution
Flat tire Check tire pressure and surface before race Spare tube + CO2 in saddle bag
Broken chain Check chain wear before race Spare quick-link
Shifting failure Adjust the day before Manually adjust limit screws
Brake failure Confirm lever feel before race Do not race
Bike computer dead battery Charge before race Ride by feel
Cleat coming loose Check screws before race Spare screws
Bottle falling out Check bottle cage screws Get water at aid station

Additional Notes by Race Type

Time Trial

  • Extra check on aero bar bolts
  • Confirm bike computer timing function
  • Aero helmet fastened properly
  • If using a disc wheel, confirm it is installed correctly

Hill Climb

  • Smooth shifting to the largest sprocket is especially important
  • Confirm chain length (not too tight on big chainring/big cog)
  • Weight check (remove anything unnecessary)

Criterium

  • Brake function is the top priority (hard braking in corners)
  • Confirm tire grip
  • Nutrition should be easy to access

Long-Distance Challenge

  • Bring full spare parts
  • Lighting (in case it gets dark)
  • Warm clothing (if there are mountain descents)

Conclusion

The 10-minute check on race morning isn’t a waste of time—it’s the final gate protecting the results of your past months of training. A single mechanical issue can ruin an entire race, and most problems can be caught during a 10-minute inspection.

Print out this SOP and keep it in your race gear bag. Go through it before every race, and you’ll be able to stand on the start line with confidence.

Good luck in your next race—may you hit a new PR!
