- Hip drag sensation: The stronger the feeling of your hips being “towed by the water,” the worse your body position (lower speed)
- Stroke rate feel: Stroke cycle frequency (strokes per minute) is a direct component of speed
Practical Tips
- Add 10 minutes of pace sense practice at the end of every workout: No need for a separate session; just tack it onto your regular training
- Log the gap between “perceived pace vs. actual pace”: Keep a simple record sheet to track weekly progress in perceptual accuracy
- Open water practice: If you get the chance to join open water swimming events around Taiwan (such as Penghu or the Northeast Coast), they are excellent testing grounds for pace sense
