Introduction

At swimming pools across Taiwan, a common sight is swimmers anxiously checking their watches after every set, or even lifting their heads mid-swim to confirm the time. This over-reliance on external timing devices often reflects a lack of “pace sense.”

Pace Sense refers to the ability to accurately judge your swimming speed using only bodily awareness, without any external reference. This skill is crucial in open water, triathlon, long-distance relays, and other scenarios—because you simply cannot keep looking at your watch.

Developing pace sense requires systematic training; it won’t naturally develop just by “swimming by feel.”


Why Is Pace Sense So Important?

  • Open water swimming: Without lane lines or turn-around timing, pace relies entirely on perception
  • Triathlon swim leg: Starting too fast depletes glycogen, compromising the bike and run that follow
  • Long-distance race pacing: Inconsistent pacing (fast start, slow finish) is the main problem for most amateur swimmers
  • Training quality monitoring: Knowing “roughly how fast you’re going” lets you judge whether a workout meets its targets without a watch

Four Methods for Pace Sense Training

Method 1: The Guessing Game (Most Basic)

  1. Swim a 100m and record the time (e.g., 1:52)
  2. Rest for 2 minutes, then swim another 100m, without looking at the clock, and guess your time after finishing
  3. Compare the difference between actual time and guessed time
  4. Goal: within ± 3 seconds

This method quickly builds a “perceptual baseline for a specific pace” and is ideal for beginners.

Method 2: Resistance-Based Perception Enhancement

Use resistance tools (paddles, resistance shorts) to swim the same distance with added drag. Then remove the tools and feel the perceptual difference of “returning to normal speed.” This contrast training sharpens a swimmer’s subjective sensitivity to speed.

Method 3: Pace Anchoring Training (Most Systematic)

Choose an “anchor pace” (e.g., 1:45/100m) and repeatedly practice the following workout:

  • Z2 aerobic pace: Breathe every 3 strokes, feels like “you could hum but not hold a full conversation”
  • Z3 threshold pace: Breathe every 3 strokes, feels like “you can only manage short phrases”
  • Z4 HIIT pace: Breathe every 2 strokes, feels like “you cannot speak”

Train yourself to recognize these perceptual differences, and you can use “breathing sensation” as a pace indicator instead of a stopwatch.


Core Perceptual Indicators of Pace Sense

  • Hand catch feel: The pressure of water on your palms reflects stroke power and speed
  • Body roll angle feel: A larger freestyle roll angle generally means higher speed
  • Hip drag sensation: The stronger the feeling of your hips being “towed by the water,” the worse your body position (lower speed)
  • Stroke rate feel: Stroke cycle frequency (strokes per minute) is a direct component of speed

Practical Tips

  • Add 10 minutes of pace sense practice at the end of every workout: No need for a separate session; just tack it onto your regular training
  • Log the gap between “perceived pace vs. actual pace”: Keep a simple record sheet to track weekly progress in perceptual accuracy
  • Open water practice: If you get the chance to join open water swimming events around Taiwan (such as Penghu or the Northeast Coast), they are excellent testing grounds for pace sense
  • Avoid total reliance on your watch: Schedule at least one “no-watch training day” per week to force yourself to rely on perception
