  2. Average power × 0.95 = estimated FTP (approximately equal to LT2)

Accuracy: Studies show a correlation of r=0.91–0.95 with laboratory LT2, with an error of approximately ±5–8%

Method 2: Ramp Test

Power increases by a fixed amount each minute (usually 20W) until exhaustion:

  • Regardless of the method chosen, standardization before testing is critical: adequate sleep, no high-intensity training within 48 hours, and a fasted or light-meal state
  • Field tests are best performed on a fixed route (such as a specific section of Alishan Highway) or on a fixed trainer to eliminate wind and gradient variables
  • Lactate threshold is not a fixed value—as training improves, significant changes can occur every 6–8 weeks, so regular retesting is necessary
  • A power meter is a prerequisite for field test accuracy; the heart rate method has too much error to be recommended as the sole basis
