Road Bike Brake Fluid Replacement Guide: DOT vs Mineral Oil Differences
Disc brake road bikes have become mainstream, but many riders’ understanding of brake fluid still stops at “as long as there’s fluid, it’s fine.” In fact, Shimano and SRAM use completely different types of brake fluid, and mixing them can cause severe damage to the braking system. This article explains the differences between the two brake fluids, when to replace them, and how to do it.

Why Can’t They Be Mixed?
This is the most important concept: Mineral oil and DOT brake fluid must never be mixed.
Reasons:
- Incompatible seals: The rubber seals in Shimano brake systems are designed to withstand mineral oil; they will swell and degrade when exposed to DOT fluid. Conversely, SRAM seals will have issues when exposed to mineral oil.
- Chemical reaction: Mixing the two fluids produces sediment that can clog brake lines.
- Brake failure: Damaged seals cause brake fluid leaks, and brake failure on a descent is extremely dangerous.
Remember this mnemonic:
- Shimano = Mineral oil
- SRAM = DOT
- Never mix them
Mineral Oil (Shimano Systems) In-Depth
Advantages
- Does not absorb water: Mineral oil is hydrophobic, so it won’t absorb moisture from the air over time, and its boiling point won’t drop.
- Component-friendly: It won’t corrode paint, carbon fiber surfaces, or plastic parts.
- Longer replacement intervals: Because it doesn’t absorb water, it can theoretically be used for longer periods.
- Safe to handle: Even if spilled, it won’t damage the frame’s surface.
Disadvantages
- Lower maximum boiling point: Top-tier mineral oil has a dry boiling point of about 280°C, which is lower than DOT 5.1’s 270°C dry boiling point (though when considering wet boiling point, mineral oil actually has the advantage).
- Brand-specific: Shimano original mineral oil is recommended. Although other brands’ mineral oils can theoretically be used, differences in composition may affect seal lifespan.

Important warning: Although DOT 5 and DOT 5.1 have similar designations, their chemical compositions are completely different. DOT 5 is silicone-based and must not be used in SRAM brake systems. SRAM specifies DOT 5.1 or DOT 4.
Advantages
- High boiling point: DOT 5.1’s dry boiling point reaches 270°C, suitable for high-intensity braking.
- Standardized: DOT specifications are an international standard, so DOT 5.1 from different brands is theoretically interchangeable.
Disadvantages
- Water absorption: DOT fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time, causing the boiling point to drop (wet boiling point is much lower than dry boiling point).
- Corrosiveness: It corrodes paint and certain plastics, requiring extra care during handling.
- Needs more frequent replacement: Due to water absorption, annual replacement is recommended.

- Brake lever feels “spongy” (lever travel becomes longer)
- Braking power gradually weakens on long descents (fluid temperature rises, approaching boiling point)
- Brake fluid changes color (clear/pale yellow → dark yellow/brown)
- Bubbles appear in the brake fluid

Basic Replacement Procedure (Shimano Mineral Oil System)
Preparation
- Remove the wheel and insert the plastic spacer into the brake caliper (to prevent brake pads from being contaminated by fluid).
- Secure the frame on a work stand with the brake lever facing upward.
- Lay down old newspapers or plastic sheeting to protect the frame.
Draining and Filling
- Open the reservoir cap on top of the brake lever (usually requires a Phillips screwdriver).
- Attach the bleed hose to the caliper’s bleed screw, with the other end placed in a waste fluid container.
- Use a 7mm wrench to open the bleed screw (about 1/4 turn).
- Slowly squeeze the brake lever to drain the old fluid from the caliper end.
- Simultaneously keep topping up the reservoir with new fluid. Do not let the reservoir run dry (otherwise air will enter the system).
- Repeat squeezing until the drained fluid becomes clear and matches the color of the new fluid.
- Tighten the bleed screw.
- Fill the reservoir to the fill line.
- Replace the reservoir cap.
Bleeding
- Pump the brake lever quickly several times, then hold it down.
- Open the bleed screw to release air bubbles, then close it immediately.
- Release the brake lever.
- Repeat the above steps until no more bubbles are released.
- Finally, confirm the brake lever feels firm (no sponginess).
Special Considerations for Taiwan’s Environment
Taiwan’s high-temperature, high-humidity environment poses additional challenges for brake fluid:
- DOT fluid absorbs water faster: Taiwan’s relative humidity often exceeds 80%, so DOT fluid absorbs water more quickly than in drier climates. SRAM users are advised to shorten the replacement interval.
- High-temperature descents: On long downhill sections such as Wuling and Hehuan Mountain, brake fluid temperatures can rise significantly. Confirm the brake fluid is in good condition before setting off.
- Salt-spray environment: Salt spray along coastal routes can accelerate corrosion of brake system components. It is recommended to clean the brake calipers after riding coastal routes.
Safety Reminders
- DOT fluid is corrosive: Wear gloves and safety goggles when handling it. If spilled, rinse immediately with water.
- Brake pad contamination: If brake fluid gets on the brake pads, braking power will drop significantly. Contaminated brake pads usually need to be replaced.
- When in doubt, take it to a bike shop: The braking system is critical to your safety. If you are not familiar with the procedure, it is strongly recommended to have it handled by a professional bike shop.
- Test after replacement: After completing the replacement, repeatedly test braking performance in a safe environment to confirm there are no abnormalities before riding on the road.
