Cleats are the critical interface connecting the rider to the bicycle. This small piece of plastic or metal profoundly affects pedaling efficiency, comfort, and knee health. Many cyclists spend tens of thousands of dollars upgrading components while overlooking this adjustment that takes just ten minutes and can dramatically improve the riding experience.

Step 1: Locate the Metatarsal Ball Position

The correct fore-aft cleat position depends on the position of the first metatarsal ball (the ball of the big toe):

Angle adjustment determines the foot’s natural orientation:

  • Most people’s feet do not point perfectly straight ahead but are slightly toe-out or toe-in
  • The cleat angle should follow the individual’s natural foot angle rather than forcing correction

How to find your natural angle:

  1. Sit somewhere elevated and let both feet hang naturally
  2. Observe the natural pointing angle of your feet
  3. Set the cleat angle to match this angle

The Importance of Float

Float is the range of free rotation the foot has after the cleat engages the pedal:
