Why Do Cyclists Need Buffering Agents?

High-intensity riding—whether it’s a climbing attack, a time trial, or a sprint to the line—rapidly accumulates hydrogen ions (H⁺), causing muscle pH to drop. This “acidification” process is one of the key mechanisms of fatigue during high-intensity exercise.

β-Alanine and Sodium Bicarbonate combat this acidification from two distinct levels—intracellular and extracellular—making them a true “dual buffering strategy.”

β-Alanine

Mechanism of Action

β-Alanine itself does not directly buffer acidity. It is the rate-limiting precursor for the synthesis of Carnosine. Carnosine is found in skeletal muscle and can directly buffer intracellular hydrogen ions, maintaining muscle pH stability.
