Motor Imagery Training: The Scientific Method of Rehearsing Perfect Performance in Your Mind

- Frequency: 5 minutes daily
- Content: In a quiet environment, imagine a familiar and enjoyable riding experience
- Focus: Practice vividness—how clear an image can you see? How real can you feel the sensations?
- Assessment: Rate the vividness of each practice session on a 1-5 scale
Intermediate Stage (Weeks 3-4): Adding Technique
- Frequency: 10 minutes daily
- Content: Imagine the specific technique you’re practicing (descending corners, climbing pace, riding in a group)
- Focus: Correctness—ensure the movements in your imagination follow proper technique patterns
- Method: First watch videos of the correct technique, then perform imagery training

Common Obstacles in Imagery Training and Solutions
“I can’t imagine clear images”
Not everyone is a visual learner. If visual imagery isn’t your strength, focus on other senses—kinesthetic (bodily sensations) is often more effective than visual. You don’t need to “see” a cinematic picture; you just need to “feel” your body moving.
“My imagery always drifts to negative scenarios”
This is very common, especially when anxious. Solutions:
- Pause the imagery and take a few deep breaths
- Rewind like a tape to the point before the mistake
- Re-imagine the correct, ideal outcome
- If negative thoughts persist, replace them with “coping imagery”—imagine how you successfully handle difficult situations
“I can’t find the time”
The beauty of imagery training is that it can be done anytime, anywhere:
- Imagine for 5 minutes with your eyes closed during your commute
- Spend 10 minutes during your lunch break rehearsing technique
- Do relaxing imagery practice lying in bed before sleep
- Perform imagery training during recovery intervals on the trainer
