Strategy 4: Return to the “Why”
A plateau is a good time to reconnect with your original motivation for the sport. Ask yourself:
- “Why did I start riding in the first place?”
- “What does cycling give me? (Not results, but the experience)”
- “If I never improved another second, would I still keep riding?”
If the answer is “yes”—then a plateau is just a bend in the road, not the finish line.
Strategy 5: Accepting Plateaus as Normal
The final and most important psychological strategy—normalizing plateau periods.
Every rider you admire on Strava has experienced a plateau. Every athlete who has stood on the podium has had moments of self-doubt. A plateau is not evidence that you’ve done something wrong—it’s a sign that you’ve reached the point your current training methods can take you—and it’s time to evolve.
