The Importance of Tire Type Selection

The tire is the only component of a road bike that makes contact with the ground, directly affecting ride feel, speed, grip, and puncture resistance. Choosing the correct tire system has a huge impact on the riding experience.

Three Main Tire Systems

Traditional Clincher System

Advantages

  • Low equipment cost: Works with standard rims
  • Easy to repair: Anyone can replace an inner tube
  • Lightweight spare: Just carry one spare tube on a ride
  • Wide tire selection: The most options available on the market

Disadvantages

  • Slightly inferior puncture resistance: Inner tubes are prone to punctures
  • Ride feel: Pressure cannot be set too low
  • Flat risk: Once the inner tube punctures, you cannot continue riding

Tubeless System

Advantages

  • Strong puncture resistance: Sealant automatically seals small punctures

Disadvantages

  • Complex installation: Initial setup requires skill
  • Sealant maintenance: Needs topping up every 3-6 months
  • Large punctures still flat: Punctures >5mm require traditional repair methods
  • Rim limitations: Requires Tubeless Ready rims and tires
  • Weight: Tire + sealant weighs more than a traditional inner tube

How to Install Tubeless

  1. Confirm both the rim and tire have the Tubeless Ready marking
  2. Clean the rim and apply airtight rim tape
  3. Install the valve (tubeless valve)
  4. Mount the tire (one bead onto the rim first)
  5. Inject sealant (50-60ml)
  6. Seat the other bead onto the rim
  7. Inflate rapidly with a floor pump or CO2 to snap the bead into place

Pro tip: Use a high-volume pump first to seat the bead, then use a regular pump to adjust the pressure.
