A 100K Long Ride Across the Pingtung Plain: A Rural Route Through Tropical Orchards and Hakka Villages
While most cyclists set their sights on Taiwan’s mountain routes, the Pingtung Plain quietly awaits with its own unique charm. There are no suffocating climbs here; instead, you’ll find endless rice paddies, betel nut orchards stretching to the horizon, mango trees heavy with fruit, and Hakka settlements scattered across the fields. A 100-kilometer long ride across the Pingtung Plain is a journey to measure Taiwan’s agricultural heartland by wheel.
Route Overview
- Start/End Point: Pingtung Railway Station
- Total Distance: Approximately 105 km
- Total Elevation Gain: Approximately 200 m (almost entirely flat)
- Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆ (Fitness) / ★☆☆☆☆ (Technical)
- Estimated Time: 5 to 7 hours (including rest stops)
- Best Time to Ride: Depart at dawn to avoid the afternoon heat
Route Planning: Counterclockwise Loop
Segment 1: Pingtung City → Wandan → Xinyuan (25 km)
Terrain: Completely flat
Scenery: Rice paddies, red bean fields, and irrigation canals
Departing from Pingtung Railway Station, head south through Pingtung City. Shortly after leaving the urban area, you’ll enter farmland. Wandan Township is Taiwan’s main red bean producing area, and during winter (December–January) you can see fields of red beans. The irrigation canal system along the way is an engineering project left from the Japanese colonial era, with clear water flowing through the fields.
Wandan’s most famous foods are red bean cakes and Wandan beef noodles. If you set off early, this is the first good spot to grab breakfast.
Supplies: Convenience stores and a traditional market in Wandan’s town center; small shops in Xinyuan Township.
Segment 2: Xinyuan → Donggang → Linbian (25 km)
Terrain: Flat
Scenery: Fishing harbors, aquaculture ponds, and bluefin tuna culture
Heading south from Xinyuan toward the coastline, Donggang is one of Taiwan’s most important offshore fishing harbors. The annual bluefin tuna season from April to June is the liveliest time in Donggang. The seafood at Huaqiao Market (Donggang Fish Harbor Direct Sales Center) is affordable and delicious—sailfish tempura and sakura shrimp fried rice are must-try snacks.
Continuing south to Linbian, you’ll pass vast aquaculture ponds. Linbian once suffered from severe land subsidence, but in recent years it has focused on developing agrivoltaics, with solar panels installed above the fish ponds, creating a unique landscape.
Supplies: Donggang’s town center has abundant dining options; convenience stores near Linbian Railway Station.
Segment 3: Linbian → Chaozhou (20 km)
Terrain: Flat with slight undulations
Scenery: Wax apple orchards, cocoa plantations
Turning inland from Linbian toward Chaozhou, this stretch passes through the most productive tropical fruit-growing region of Pingtung County. Pingtung is Taiwan’s largest wax apple producing area, and rows of wax apple orchards along the roadside hang heavy with crimson fruit during the harvest season (May–July). In recent years, Pingtung has also developed a cocoa-growing industry, with some farms offering chocolate-making experiences—worth scheduling a stop if time allows.
Chaozhou Township is Pingtung County’s second-largest city, with well-developed amenities. Chaozhou cold-hot ice is the area’s most famous dessert: hot glutinous rice balls and hot peanuts are placed over shaved ice, and the unique contrast of cold and hot is worth trying.
Supplies: Convenience stores, restaurants, and snack shops in Chaozhou’s town center. Recommended: Chaozhou cold-hot ice.
Segment 4: Chaozhou → Wanluan → Neipu (20 km)
Terrain: Gentle rolling hills, near the foothills
Scenery: Hakka settlements, Pig’s Knuckle Street, tobacco drying houses
This stretch enters the heart of Pingtung’s Hakka settlements. Wanluan Township is famous throughout Taiwan for its pig’s knuckle, and the dozens of shops along Wanluan Pig’s Knuckle Street each have their own character—this is a major food stop on the journey. We recommend trying the authentic Wanluan pig’s knuckle at long-established restaurants such as Hai Hong Hotel or Lin Jia Pig’s Knuckle.
On the country roads from Wanluan to Neipu, you can see well-preserved Hakka tobacco drying houses (buildings once used for curing tobacco leaves) and traditional Hakka farmhouses (three-sided courtyard homes). These century-old buildings bear witness to the history of Hakka ancestors reclaiming the Pingtung Plain. Neipu Old Street preserves a cluster of traditional Hakka architecture, and Changli Temple (the only temple in Taiwan dedicated to Han Yu) is worth a visit.
Supplies: Wanluan Pig’s Knuckle Street (top choice for lunch); convenience stores in Neipu’s town center.
Segment 5: Neipu → Changzhi → Pingtung City (15 km)
Terrain: Flat
Scenery: Betel nut orchards and an industrial transition zone
The final stretch returns from Neipu to Pingtung City via Changzhi. The scenery along this section is relatively monotonous, passing through a mixed agricultural-industrial area, but the distance is short—just right for a cool-down ride. Back in Pingtung City, you can round off the journey with local snacks at the Pingtung Night Market.
Supplies: Convenience stores in Changzhi’s town center; Pingtung City has full supply options.
Climate and Riding Season
The Pingtung Plain has a tropical climate with high temperatures year-round. Managing your body temperature while riding is crucial:
| Month | Average Temperature | Rainfall | Riding Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jan–Feb | 18–25°C | Low | Best season, cool and comfortable |
| Mar–Apr | 22–28°C | Low | Comfortable, small temperature difference between day and night |
| May–Jun | 26–32°C | Plum rain | Watch out for rain |
| Jul–Sep | 28–35°C | Afternoon thunderstorms | Depart at dawn, finish before noon |
| Oct–Dec | 22–28°C | Low | Comfortable, occasional downslope winds |
Heat Prevention Tips
- In summer, be sure to depart before 5:30 AM
- Hydrate every 20 minutes; don’t wait until you’re thirsty
- Wear light-colored moisture-wicking jerseys and use sun-protection arm sleeves
- Carry electrolyte supplements (sports drink powder or salt tablets)
- At convenience stores, don’t just buy water—pair it with a sodium-containing sports drink
Gear Recommendations
For a 100 km flat ride, the gear focus is on comfort and sun protection:
- Bike: A road bike or flat-bar road bike is most suitable; a mountain bike works but will be slower
- Saddle: Long flat rides demand a lot from the saddle—make sure you use one that fits you
- Cycling shorts: Essential; riding for hours without padded shorts will be painful
- Bottles: At least two (750 ml each); convenience stores along the way allow refills
- Sun protection: Helmet visor insert, sunglasses, sun-protection arm sleeves, sunscreen
- Portable snacks: Bananas, rice balls, energy gels
Why Ride the Pingtung Plain
Taiwan’s cycling culture often glorifies “climbing heroes,” and flat riding seems to lack appeal. But a 100K long ride across the Pingtung Plain has its own unique value: it trains sustained, steady power output and tests your ability to maintain rhythm without the respite of descents. More importantly, riding on the plain lets you truly “see” this land—rice stalks swaying in the wind, fruit farmers working in their orchards, Hakka women drying radish strips in front of their courtyard homes. These are sights you’ll never see while hunched over climbing a mountain.
Bring your bike to the Pingtung Plain, and at the speed best suited to this land, take a slow, long ride.
