Mechanical Failures Are Preventable

In bicycle racing, mechanical failure is the most frustrating reason for a DNF. Weeks or even months of training can be undone by a loose brake cable, a worn tire, or a loose bolt. The good news is that the vast majority of race-day mechanical issues can be prevented with a pre-race inspection.

Below is a systematic inspection manual based on the “top-to-bottom, front-to-back” principle, recommended to be completed 24 hours before race day.

Part 1: Drivetrain

Chain

The chain is the fastest-wearing component in the drivetrain and a key factor in shifting quality.

Checklist:

  1. Chain Wear

    • Use a chain wear indicator to measure elongation
    • 0.5% elongation: consider replacing
    • 0.75% elongation: must replace
    • Over 0.75%: may also require replacing the cassette
  2. Cleanliness

    • The chain should be clean and properly lubricated
    • Clean the chain before the race using a chain cleaner or solvent
    • Re-lube: use chain lube matched to race-day weather (dry lube for dry conditions, wet lube for wet conditions)
    • Wipe off excess oil with a dry rag after lubing
  3. Chain Connection

    • Check that the quick link is securely fastened
    • Confirm the quick link orientation is correct (opening facing opposite the direction of travel)

Shifting System

Front Derailleur:

  • Shift through all chainrings one by one on the workstand
  • Check for hesitation or skipping
  • Confirm limit screws are set correctly (chain won’t drop to the inside or outside)
  • Cable tension adjustment: use the barrel adjuster if fine-tuning is needed

Rear Derailleur:

  • Shift through all cassette sprockets one by one
  • Listen for unusual noises or hesitation
  • Pay special attention to shifts to the largest and smallest sprockets
  • Check whether the rear derailleur hanger is bent (view from behind; the pulleys should be parallel to the cassette)
  • B-screw adjustment: gap between the upper pulley and cassette sprockets

Shift Cables:

  • Check outer housing for cracks or crushing
  • Check inner cable for burrs or rust
  • Verify cable end caps are intact
  • If cables are over a year old, consider replacing them before the race

Chainrings and Crankset

  • Check crank bolt torque (typically 12-14 Nm, refer to manufacturer specs)
  • Confirm chainrings are not bent (view from the side while spinning to check for wobble)
  • Verify pedal threads are tight (right pedal tightens clockwise, left pedal tightens counterclockwise)

Part 2: Braking System

Disc Brakes

Brake Pads:

  • Check pad thickness; at least 1.5mm of brake material must remain
  • Confirm pads are installed correctly and spring clips are seated
  • Listen for rubbing sounds (there should be no continuous contact between rotor and pads)

Rotors:

  • Visually inspect the rotor for warping
  • Spin the wheel and watch for rotor wobble as it passes through the caliper
  • If slight wobble exists, correct it with a rotor truing tool
  • Confirm rotor bolt torque (typically 5-6 Nm, tighten in a star pattern)

Hydraulic System:

  • Squeeze the brake levers; the feel should be firm, not “spongy”
  • Check hoses for signs of fluid leaks
  • If the feel is soft, bleeding may be needed (recommended a week before the race, not the day before)

Rim Brakes (Caliper Brakes)

Brake Pads:

  • Check wear indicator lines to confirm sufficient braking surface remains
  • Brake pads should contact the rim parallel to it
  • Toe-in setting: the front of the pad contacts the rim slightly before the rear (about 1mm difference)
  • Confirm no debris is embedded in the pads (metal fragments, etc.)

Brake Cables:

  • Cable tension should be appropriate: the lever should not touch the handlebar when pulled fully
  • After release, brake pads should fully retract

Part 3: Wheels

Tires

Tire Pressure Settings:

This is a detail many riders overlook, yet tire pressure has a huge impact on ride feel and performance.

These are recommended values for road clincher tires; for tubeless, you can drop 5-10 psi

Tread Inspection:

  • Check the tread for cuts, cracks, or embedded debris
  • Pay special attention to the tire shoulders (sidewalls) for wear or cracking
  • Confirm there are no abnormal bulges on the tire (could be a sign of casing damage)

Bead Seating:

  • After inflation, check that the bead sits evenly on the rim
  • Viewed from the side, the tire should not wobble noticeably as it spins

Rims and Spokes

  • Spin the wheels and check for wobble (use the brake pads or a fixed object as a reference)
  • Check spoke tension by hand, one by one (should be uniform, with no obviously loose spokes)
  • Confirm quick-release skewers or thru-axles are tightened (very important!)

Quick Release / Thru-Axle

  • Quick release: closing should meet noticeable resistance, with enough force to leave an imprint on your palm
  • Thru-axle: tighten to the manufacturer’s recommended torque
  • Confirm the wheel is fully seated in the dropouts / fork ends

Part 4: Frame and Seatpost

Seatpost and Saddle

  • Check seatpost clamp torque (typically 5-7 Nm)
  • Check saddle rail bolt torque
  • Confirm saddle angle and position haven’t changed (recommend marking the seatpost)
  • Rock the saddle to confirm there is no play

Stem and Handlebars

  • Stem clamp bolt torque (typically 4-6 Nm; be careful not to overtighten carbon handlebars)
  • Handlebar rotation test: hold the front wheel and try to twist the handlebar; there should be no slippage
  • Headset check: hold the brakes and rock the bike back and forth; there should be no play
  • Check bar tape condition and that the ends are secured firmly

Frame Overall

  • Visually inspect the frame for cracks (especially at weld points or carbon junctions)
  • Check for creaks in the bottom bracket area (stand and rock the bike while pedaling)
  • Confirm all bottle cage bolts are tight

Part 5: Accessories

Bike Computer

  • Battery sufficiently charged (at least 50% or more)
  • Sensors paired correctly (speed, cadence, heart rate, power)
  • Auto-pause function turned off (not needed during a race)
  • Display pages set to race mode
  • Calibrate the power meter before the race (zero offset)

Cycling Shoes and Pedals

  • Check cleat wear
  • Tighten cleat bolts
  • Test clipping in and out: should be smooth but not release accidentally
  • Set pedal spring tension appropriately

Final Check Procedure (Race Morning Before Departure)

After all detailed checks are complete, do a quick “5-minute final check” on race morning before leaving:

  1. M - Mechanical: Quickly shift through the gears to confirm smooth operation
  2. A - Air: Confirm tire pressure (temperature changes can affect pressure)
  3. B - Brakes: Squeeze front and rear brakes once each to confirm they work
  4. C - Chain: Visually inspect the chain condition
  5. Q - Quick Release: Confirm front and rear quick releases / thru-axles are locked

Remember the mnemonic: MABCQ (Mom, please check the quick release)

Tool Kit Recommendations

Pre-Race Inspection Tool Kit

  • Hex wrench set (2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8mm)
  • Torque wrench (recommended 2-15 Nm range)
  • Chain wear indicator
  • Pump (with pressure gauge)
  • Chain lube
  • Clean rags
  • Zip ties

Race-Day On-Bike Tools

  • 1-2 inner tubes (or tubeless sealant + plugs)
  • CO2 cartridges + adapter (or a mini pump)
