The Structure of a Road Bike Handlebar
A road bike’s drop handlebar has three main hand positions, each with a different purpose:
| Position | Name | Main Use |
|---|---|---|
| Top straight section | Top Bar | Relaxed cruising, long climbs |
| Top of the brake lever | Hoods | The most commonly used everyday riding position |
| Curved lower section | Drops | High-speed descents, sprinting, aerodynamics |
When to Use Each Position
Top Bar:
- Relaxed riding
- Long climbs (opens up the chest for breathing)
- Comfortable riding for beginners
- Warning: slower brake response
Hoods:
- The most recommended everyday riding position
- Quick access to the brakes
- Moderate aerodynamic drag
- Suitable for most situations
Drops:
- High-speed sprinting
- High-speed descending
- Riding into a headwind (reduces drag)
- The most aerodynamic position
Choosing Handlebar Size
Handlebar width: Usually chosen to match shoulder width
| Body Type | Recommended Handlebar Width |
|---|---|
| Narrow shoulders (<38cm) | 38-40cm |
| Medium shoulders (38-42cm) | 40-42cm |
| Wide shoulders (>42cm) | 44-46cm |
Bar Reach and Drop:
- Reach: The horizontal distance from the center to the hoods (affects how far forward you lean)
- Drop: The vertical distance from the top bar to the drops (affects the comfort of the aero position)
Recommendation for beginners: Reach 80-85mm, Drop 125-130mm (a shorter, shallower design offers better comfort)
Handlebar Height Setup
Stem height affects how aggressive your riding position is:
- High handlebar (stem with spacers): More upright, comfortable but with worse aerodynamics
- Low handlebar (stem flipped down): More stretched out and aerodynamic, but can be uncomfortable for beginners
Recommendation: Beginners should start high and gradually go lower, letting the body adapt to a more forward-leaning position over time.
Handlebar Tape Techniques
Handlebar tape affects grip feel and shock absorption:
| Material | Characteristics | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| EVA foam | Inexpensive, lightweight | General use |
| Silicone | Good shock absorption, durable | Long-distance riding |
| Rubber | Non-slip, natural material | Riders who sweat a lot |
| Synthetic leather | Premium feel | Appearance-focused riders |
Wrapping technique: Wrap from the bottom up, overlapping by 1/3, and make sure there are no gaps that expose the bolts.
Aero Bars
Used for time trials and triathlons, they dramatically reduce aerodynamic drag:
- Keep the upper body parallel to the ground
- Can save 20-30% of aerodynamic drag
- Generally prohibited in road races
- Requires dedicated practice to use safely
