During the run leg of a triathlon, your legs have already depleted a large amount of glycogen during the swim and bike legs. Belt Wearing Techniques
Anti-Bounce Setup
- Pre-load test: After loading all supplies, jog in place for 30 seconds to confirm stability
- Weight balance: Keep the weight of supplies on the left and right sides as symmetrical as possible
- Positioning: The belt should sit on the upper edge of the hip bones, not at the narrowest part of the waist
- Tightness: Two fingers should fit underneath, but it should not slide down when bouncing
- Inner anti-slip: Choose a model with silicone grip strips, or add anti-slip tape yourself
Optimizing the Retrieval Motion
The motion of grabbing an energy gel mid-run should be practiced until you can do it without slowing down:
- One-hand operation: Reach back with the same-side hand, hooking your thumb over the top of the gel packet
- Pull upward: Pull it out along the direction of the gel loop
- Tear open: Bite one corner to tear it open (pre-cutting a small notch before the race makes it easier)
- Take in portions: You don’t have to squeeze it all out at once; take it in 2-3 mouthfuls
- Dispose: Only discard empty wrappers at aid stations (environmental rules)

Race Day Setup SOP
The Day Before the Race
- Confirm the fueling plan (intake schedule per kilometer/per minute)
- Prepare all energy gels and write the planned intake kilometer on the packaging with a permanent marker
- Load them into the belt in order
- Put salt tablets into a small pouch or dispensing bottle
- Place the belt on top of the T2 transition bag
During T2 Transition
- Fasten the belt (number facing the back)
- Confirm all energy gels are in the correct position
- After exiting the transition area, rotate the number to the front
- Take the first energy gel 15–20 minutes after the run starts
Mid-Race Adjustments
- If the belt feels too loose (due to weight loss, sweating): stop at an aid station to adjust

- If you experience gastrointestinal discomfort: postpone solid fuel intake and switch to water and sports drinks
