During the run leg of a triathlon, your legs have already depleted a large amount of glycogen during the swim and bike legs. At this point, energy intake is no longer a “nice-to-have” but a “critical lifeline.” A nutrition belt (Nutrition Belt / Race Belt with Gel Loops) allows you to carry enough supplies and grab them on the go whenever needed, without having to rely entirely on aid stations along the course.

Nutrition Belt vs. Race Number Belt

Although another article in this series covers race number belts specifically, nutrition belts and race number belts are often confused with each other. Let’s clarify the differences here:

Choosing by Race Distance

Sprint Distance (5km Run)

  • Nutrition needs: Very low; usually no additional fuel required
  • Recommendation: A pure race number belt is sufficient; bring at most 1-2 energy gels as backup
  • Total calories carried: 0-200 kcal

Standard Distance (10km Run)

  • Nutrition needs: 1-2 energy gels
  • Recommendation: Race number belt with 2-3 gel loops
  • Total calories carried: 200-400 kcal
  • Setup: Start with 2 gels + 1 pack of salt tablets

Half-Distance Triathlon (21.1km Run)

  • Total calories carried: Carry 800-1200 kcal at the start, supplemented by course aid stations
  • Setup strategy: Load in segments; place part of the supplies in the T2 special needs bag

Energy Gel Arrangement Logic

Arrange the energy gels on the belt in the order you plan to consume them:

Zoned by Type

If you are using different types of nutrition products:

  • Right side: Caffeinated energy gels (use in the first half for a boost)
  • Left side: Non-caffeinated energy gels (use in the second half to avoid excess caffeine)
  • Center pouch: Salt tablets, electrolyte tablets
  • Marking system: Use different colored tape to mark them so you can grab the right one without looking mid-run

Why Do You Need Salt Tablets?

During the run leg of a long-distance triathlon, you lose not only water but also large amounts of sodium, potassium, magnesium, and other electrolytes. Hyponatremia is a serious risk during the run leg of a full-distance triathlon.

Individual variation: Sweat rate and sweat sodium concentration vary greatly from person to person. It is recommended to do a sweat test to understand your actual sodium loss and calculate your nutrition needs precisely.

Aid Station Strategy

Most triathlon events have aid stations every 2-3 kilometers:

  • Own bottle as backup: Carry only a small-capacity bottle to cover the gaps between aid stations
  • Aid stations as primary: Use the water and sports drinks available on the course
  • Hybrid strategy: Carry concentrated electrolyte solution and dilute it with water at aid stations

Belt Wearing Techniques

Anti-Bounce Setup

  1. Pre-load test: After loading all supplies, jog in place for 30 seconds to confirm stability
  2. Weight balance: Keep the weight of supplies on the left and right sides as symmetrical as possible
  3. Positioning: The belt should sit on the upper edge of the hip bones, not at the narrowest part of the waist
  4. Tightness: Two fingers should fit underneath, but it should not slide down when bouncing
  5. Inner anti-slip: Choose a model with silicone grip strips, or add anti-slip tape yourself

Optimizing the Retrieval Motion

The motion of grabbing an energy gel mid-run should be practiced until you can do it without slowing down:

  1. One-hand operation: Reach back with the same-side hand, hooking your thumb over the top of the gel packet
  2. Pull upward: Pull it out along the direction of the gel loop
  3. Tear open: Bite one corner to tear it open (pre-cutting a small notch before the race makes it easier)
  4. Take in portions: You don’t have to squeeze it all out at once; take it in 2-3 mouthfuls
  5. Dispose: Only discard empty wrappers at aid stations (environmental rules)

Race Day Setup SOP

The Day Before the Race

  1. Confirm the fueling plan (intake schedule per kilometer/per minute)
  2. Prepare all energy gels and write the planned intake kilometer on the packaging with a permanent marker
  3. Load them into the belt in order
  4. Put salt tablets into a small pouch or dispensing bottle
  5. Place the belt on top of the T2 transition bag

During T2 Transition

  1. Fasten the belt (number facing the back)
  2. Confirm all energy gels are in the correct position
  3. After exiting the transition area, rotate the number to the front
  4. Take the first energy gel 15–20 minutes after the run starts

Mid-Race Adjustments

  • If the belt feels too loose (due to weight loss, sweating): stop at an aid station to adjust
  • If supplies are running low: refill at on-course aid stations
  • If you experience gastrointestinal discomfort: postpone solid fuel intake and switch to water and sports drinks

Setting up a hydration belt may seem trivial, but in the latter half of the race, when your brain can no longer make complex decisions due to fatigue, a pre-configured fueling system will automatically guide you to take the right nutrition at the right time—that is the value of preparation.
