Differences Between Triathlon and Road Racing on the Bike

The bike leg of a triathlon differs from a typical road race in several key ways:
| Difference | Regular Road Race | Triathlon Bike Leg |
|---|---|---|
| Bike type | Road bike | Time trial (TT) bike recommended |
| Drafting rules | Allowed | Strictly prohibited |
| After riding | Rest | Immediately run |
| Pacing strategy | All-out effort | Save legs for running |
| Fueling | Group aid stations | Self-supplied or limited aid |
Characteristics of a Triathlon (TT) Bike
Time trial bikes are recommended for triathlon events:
- Aero bars: let the rider get low, significantly reducing wind resistance
- More aggressive geometry: a more vertical seat tube, protecting the quadriceps
- Disc/closed rear wheel: better aerodynamic performance
- Disc wheels: common on the rear
If you don’t have a TT bike: adding aero bars to a road bike is also a viable option.
Transition (T2) Technique
The transition from the bike leg into the run:
- Unclip from your shoes 100-200m before entering the transition area
- Pedal your way into the transition area with feet on top of the shoes
- Rack your bike
- Change into running shoes (elastic laces recommended)
- Start running immediately
Goal: keep T2 under 60-90 seconds
Pacing Strategy: Save Your Legs for Running
This is the biggest mindset shift when moving from road racing to triathlon:
| Race Distance | Recommended Bike Intensity | Reserve for Running |
|---|---|---|
| Sprint (20K) | 90-95% FTP | Small reserve |
| Olympic (40K) | 85-90% FTP | Moderate reserve |
| Half (90K) | 80-85% FTP | Larger reserve |
| Full (180K) | 70-75% FTP | Substantial reserve |
The No-Drafting Rule
Triathlon rules require riders to maintain a distance from each other (typically 10-12 meters), or face a time penalty.
Points to note:
- You must pass quickly when overtaking
- After being overtaken, you must immediately exit the drafting zone
- Referees patrol the course, and violations result in a 2-5 minute penalty
Fueling on the Bike Leg
Fueling in triathlon is more complex than in a pure road race:
- You need to eat and drink while riding
- Most races have aid stations, but you also need to carry fuel on the bike
- Practice the “no hands” technique for opening energy gels
Transitioning from Road Cycling Training to Triathlon Training
Once you add triathlon to the mix, your training plan needs adjustment:
Recommended training ratio:
- Swimming: 2-3 times per week
- Cycling: 3-4 times per week (slightly reduced)
- Running: 3-4 times per week
- Brick training: once per week (bike + run)
Brick training: the most important triathlon-specific training method — running immediately after finishing a bike ride, getting your legs used to the transition.
