“I haven’t hit my target weight yet, I’ll push a little longer.”—If your FTP has already dropped more than 5%, or if you experience any of the warning signs mentioned earlier in this article, stop losing weight immediately. Keeping 95% of your power is far more important than losing that last kilogram.

Mistake 3: Still Restricting Food on Race Day

This is the most fatal mistake. The only dietary goal on race day is to maximize performance. That means adequate carbohydrate intake, regardless of what the scale says.

Mistake 4: Ignoring Hydration Status

Some riders try to “lose weight” by restricting fluids before a race. This is not only ineffective (dehydration directly reduces power output), but it can also be life-threatening in hot weather.

  • The race type most affected by weight
  • Power-to-weight ratio is the decisive factor
  • Worth doing a full weight loss cycle
  • But still ensure sufficient glycogen reserves for sustained climbing

Flat Time Trials

  • Aerodynamic drag is the primary factor
  • Absolute power matters more than power-to-weight ratio
  • Weight management has lower priority
  • Optimizing aero position and equipment may be more effective than losing weight

Road Races (Mixed Terrain in a Peloton)

  • Requires balancing climbing ability with flat/sprint capability
  • Being too light may lack sprint explosiveness in the pack
  • Recommended to maintain natural training weight without extreme weight loss

Long-Distance Endurance Events (200+ km)

  • Sustained fueling capacity matters more than low body weight
  • Moderate fat reserves are actually an advantage
  • Focus on training your gut’s fueling capacity rather than losing weight

Post-Race Weight Management

Avoiding the “Rebound Effect”

The most common issue after a race is rapid weight regain. The following strategies can help you transition smoothly:

  1. Allow yourself 1-2 weeks of unrestricted eating—you deserve to reward yourself
  2. Gradually return to your normal eating pattern, rather than jumping from extreme restriction straight to indulgence
  3. Accept a 1-2 kg rebound as normal (glycogen and water replenishment)
  4. If your next target race is 4-8 weeks away, staying within 1-2 kg of race weight is sufficient

After the Season Ends

  • Stop all weight loss efforts for at least 8-12 weeks
  • Allow both body and mind to fully recover
  • A weight regain of 2-4 kg is healthy and normal
  • Enjoy dietary freedom in the off-season
