Wheels are the upgrade component that has the biggest impact on ride feel on a road bike. The reason is simple: wheels affect weight, aerodynamics, comfort, and acceleration all at once. A great wheelset can make the same bike feel like a completely different machine.

Choosing Rim Depth

Low-Profile Rims (25-35mm)

  • Pros: Light weight, good crosswind stability, favorable for climbing
  • Cons: Limited aerodynamic benefit
  • Best for: Mountainous routes, lighter climbers
  • Typical weight: 1,300-1,450g (pair)

Mid-Profile Rims (40-50mm)

  • Pros: Best balance of aerodynamics and weight, most versatile
  • Cons: Still some crosswind effect
  • Best for: An all-around choice for most riders

High-Profile Rims (55-65mm)

The Evolution of Rim Width

In recent years, internal rim width has evolved from 15mm all the way to 21-23mm, which has become the mainstream standard. A wider rim paired with a wider tire (28-30mm) delivers:

  1. Lower rolling resistance (more even tire deformation)
  2. Better comfort
  3. Better grip
  4. A more aerodynamic tire profile

Tubular vs Clincher vs Tubeless

Tubular

  • The traditional choice for pro teams
  • Can still be ridden briefly even after a puncture
  • Inconvenient to install and repair
  • Trend: Being replaced by tubeless

Clincher (Tire + Inner Tube)

  • The most traditional setup, easiest to repair
  • Simply swap the inner tube after a puncture
  • Higher rolling resistance (friction from the inner tube)

Tubeless (Including Hookless)

  • Today’s dominant trend
  • Lowest rolling resistance
  • Sealant can automatically seal small punctures
  • Allows lower tire pressure for improved comfort
  • Installation requires an airtight rim tape and sealant
