Nervousness is a physiological state of arousal; the key is whether you can “regulate” it and channel it into energy. Breathing control, pre-race routines, and imagery rehearsal are tools specifically designed to handle over-arousal. Many of the athletes I’ve coached who perform best under pressure are actually super nervous people in private—they just learned how to coexist with their nerves.
Q: Can mental resilience be quantified and tracked?
A: You can use several indirect indicators. Objective: heart rate recovery speed at the same intensity, or RPE changes at the same power output. Subjective: You can rate your “confidence in facing difficult situations” on a scale of 1 to 10 each week and track the trend over time. There are also sports psychology scales available, but those usually require professional administration and interpretation. The point is to track the trend; don’t get hung up on a single number.
Q: I can’t afford a sports psychologist; is it useful to train on my own?
A: Extremely useful. The four or five tools in this article can all be practiced on your own, and most amateur athletes can see significant improvement just by mastering self-talk, stress inoculation, and imagery. Professional sports psychology assistance is suitable for those entering the competitive level to chase rankings, or for those who find their psychological distress has exceeded the scope of sports and is affecting their daily lives. The former is for advanced optimization, while the latter is recommended for medical or professional consultation.
Conclusion: Your Mind is Your Final and Greatest Training Space
After coaching for so many years, I have become increasingly convinced of one thing: when a group of people has reached the peak of physical fitness, their equipment is similar, and the course is the same for everyone, what ultimately creates the gap is mental resilience. And the most fascinating part is—it has almost no ceiling, and most of it can be acquired through training.
You don’t need to be born a tough guy. What you need is to take mental training seriously and schedule it into your week just like you would a power-based workout. Start with one prepared self-talk phrase, start with one session of focused rhythmic breathing, and start with five minutes of imagery before bed. Keep at it, and you will find that the climbs that once made you crash and the last five kilometers that made you want to give up will slowly become old friends that you “recognize and can hold on through.”
