The official distance is 179.1 km with approximately 1,800 meters of cumulative climbing; measured directly from the stage’s GPX track, the distance is 180.8 km with 1,323 meters of climbing. The discrepancy between these two figures isn’t a matter of right or wrong, but rather different measurement methods: official data is typically based on the race director’s reconnaissance mileage and the official road book, including the neutral zone before the start and minor route adjustments; GPX climbing figures depend heavily on sampling density and elevation-smoothing algorithms—the denser the sampling and the less smoothing, the higher the climbing number, and vice versa. For readers, one thing is enough to remember: by Tour de France standards, the climbing on this day was “limited”—three hills, all rated only Category 4 (cat.4), with none capable of creating any real selection.

The stage was ultimately won by Tim Merlier (Soudal Quick-Step) in 3 hours 38 minutes 53 seconds, at an average speed approaching 49 km/h. That average speed is considerable for a stage categorized as “rolling,” and it directly explains the race’s shape: the opening was a tug-of-war between the breakaway and the sprint teams, the middle section briefly stabilized, the final 50 kilometers saw another artificial acceleration, and it ultimately ended in a full bunch sprint. However, simply categorizing S12 as a “boring transition stage” would miss the most valuable parts of the day. What’s truly worth recording are three narrative threads unfolding simultaneously.

The first is Baptiste Veistroffer (Lotto Intermarché)'s near-solo breakaway all day long. In his first-ever Tour de France, he made the breakaway for the third time, swept both the intermediate sprint and the two hilltops, and ultimately took the day’s “Most Combative” award, along with the “Best Teammate” award for the first week. This was a French baroudeur’s most complete self-expression on the grandest stage.

The second is Lidl-Trek’s attempt to rewrite the script using the terrain. From positioning for points at the intermediate sprint, to three teammates launching successive attacks in the final 25 kilometers, to Mads Pedersen himself attacking personally—this was everything a team wanting to “win without a head-to-head sprint” on a sprint stage could do. They ultimately didn’t succeed, but the failure itself is highly instructive.

The third is how the 1.6-kilometer straight, slightly uphill finishing stretch overturned the calculations of several top lead-out trains, allowing Alpecin-Premier Tech’s golden combination to be pierced by two riders in the final 300 meters.

Add to that a high-speed crash approximately 350 meters from the finish, and the day’s information density is far higher than the on-paper “1,300 meters of climbing, maximum gradient under 5%” suggests. Below, we break it down segment by segment.

Pre-Race Situation: Yellow Jersey Settled, Green Jersey Just Heating Up

Entering Stage 12, the general classification (GC) picture was already quite clear. Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) sat comfortably in yellow, with a total time of 43 hours 04 minutes 01 second; second-placed Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) trailed by 3 minutes 36 seconds; third-placed Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull - Bora - Hansgrohe) was 4 minutes 06 seconds back. Fourth through ninth were Juan Ayuso (+4’22"), Paul Seixas (+4’35"), Florian Lipowitz (+4’44"), Isaac del Toro (+5’08"), Mattias Skjelmose (+5’45"), and Lenny Martinez (+6’34"), with gaps between them all still within range of being overturned by a single mountain stage—but to shake the yellow jersey, more than a single successful attack would now be required.

Precisely because the GC situation had temporarily solidified, the competitive focus of Stage 12 naturally shifted to the green jersey. Before the stage, Pedersen led, with Biniam Girmay (NSN Cycling Team) and Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Premier Tech) in close pursuit, while Merlier kept accumulating points through his explosive finishes. The green jersey’s points structure dictates the tactics: flat-stage winners take the highest points, and the intermediate sprint offers a separate set of points—the two combined tell the full story. For an all-rounder like Pedersen—whose sprinting is good enough but who may not beat Merlier or Philipsen in a pure flat-out duel—the intermediate sprint points aren’t a side dish; they’re the main course. This played out vividly at the intermediate sprint in Decize, which we’ll discuss in detail shortly.

Another pre-race backdrop is the psychological state of breakaway riders. Stages at the start of the second week are often among the days with the highest breakaway motivation. The first week’s exposure opportunities have been largely distributed; teams still without a win are growing anxious, and sponsors’ patience is wearing thin. Meanwhile, the mountain showdowns haven’t arrived yet, so sprint teams still have relatively complete rosters and enough energy to control the race. This combination of “both sides having motivation” typically produces an extremely aggressive opening—and indeed, that’s exactly what happened: the flag dropped and the racing ignited immediately.

One more layer of context can’t be ignored: the previous day’s stage winner was Søren Wærenskjold of Uno-X Mobility. A mid-sized team just taking a stage win makes other teams still without a victory more restless, and it makes the top sprint teams more determined that “we can’t let another opportunity slip away.” S12’s high-intensity opening, and the sprint teams’ decisiveness in holding the gap to two minutes at the 43-kilometer mark, can both be understood within this framework.

Finally, the weather and road conditions deserve mention. Veistroffer noted after the stage that it “rained a little, the weather was decent, lots of people on the roadside, and freshly paved asphalt everywhere.” This description matters for understanding the race’s rhythm: high-quality roads, manageable rolling resistance, the peloton able to cruise at extremely high average speeds, and the breakaway finding it extraordinarily difficult to maintain a two-minute gap. The average speed approaching 49 km/h is, in a sense, the quantified version of that statement. For breakaway riders, good roads are a double-edged sword—comfortable to ride on, but they also make it easier for the hundred-plus riders behind to chase.

Route Technical Analysis: Three Cat.4 Climbs, and That 1.6-Kilometre False-Flat Sprint

From a technical standpoint, Stage 12’s route can be broken down into four distinct sections with completely different characters.

Section One, 0 to 46 km: Open, flat, with the risk in the wind. Departing from the Porte du Circuit at the Magny-Cours circuit, the peloton heads south along the D58 through Saint-Parize-le-Châtel and Moiry, passing through Saint-Pierre-le-Moûtier at 11.7 km, then Azy-le-Vif (22.6 km), Le Charme (28.4 km), Neuville-lès-Decize (29.2 km), and Saint-Germain-Chassenay (35.2 km), entering Decize at 42.6 km and passing the intermediate sprint point near the 46 km mark. This stretch has almost no significant terrain variation; it is a typical Loire alluvial plain profile: wide-open views, straight roads, and a lack of shelter. The only variable on this terrain is crosswinds—once the wind direction forms an angle with the road, the peloton risks splitting into echelons. No large-scale wind splits occurred on this stage, meaning the wind that day never reached a threatening level, which also explains why the sprint teams were able to keep the breakaway’s gap under two minutes by the 43 km mark.

Section Two, 46 to 100 km: Entering the rolling terrain at the edge of the Morvan. Past Decize, the route turns northeast, passing through Marcy in Champvert (48.8 km) and L’Ouche Migeard in Verneuil (54.6 km), reaching Cercy-la-Tour at 59.3 km, followed by Fours (66.2 km) and Apponay in Rémilly (72 km). The first categorised climb of the day, Côte de Lanty (cat.4, officially marked at 76.5 km), appears here. The route then threads through Les Flaudes in Avrée and Recoulon in Fléty, passing through Luzy at 86.5 km before heading towards Cuzy, where the second climb, Côte de Cuzy (cat.4), arrives at the 97–98 km mark. These two climbs share common traits: short in length, gentle in gradient, and early in position. They hold no significance for the GC, pose no threat to pure sprinters, and their only value lies in a single point for the polka-dot jersey and as leverage points for infighting within the breakaway.

Section Three, 100 to 150 km: Long-distance cruising through the industrial belt. After Toulon-sur-Arroux (106.5 km), the route heads north along the D985, passing through La Praye, La Coudraye, and La Villa Sirot in Saint-Eugène, then on to Saint-Bérain-sous-Sanvignes (125.2 km), Montceau-les-Mines (126.2 km), and Blanzy (132.3 km), crossing a level crossing at 133.9 km. It then continues through Pont des Morands near Saint-Eusèbe (141.3 km), Montchanin-le-Haut (142.5 km), and Moulin à Vent and Les Grandes Bruyères in Saint-Laurent-d’Andenay. This is the most mentally taxing part of the entire day: wide roads, high speed, and terrain consisting only of barely perceptible rises and dips—no single point worth attacking, yet it constantly drains energy. For the breakaway, this is the stretch where they are most likely to be “quietly reeled back in”; for the anonymous riders in the peloton, it is the two hours of the day that demand the most focus while offering the greatest temptation to switch off.

Section Four, 150 km to the finish: The real race begins. Starting around La Grosse Auberge in Saint-Martin-d’Auxy, Les Baudots, La Croix Pautet, and Le Reuil in Marcilly-lès-Buxy, the route enters the vineyard hills of the Côte Chalonnaise, where the road narrows, corners multiply, and the terrain turns into a series of continuous short climbs. After Les Blignys, Cersot (155.6 km), and La Redoute in Sassangy, the third and final categorised climb, Côte de Montagny-lès-Buxy (cat.4, 159.4 km), is positioned here, just about 20 km from the finish.

The placement of this climb carries significant destructive potential. It is too short to directly eliminate the sprinters; but it appears at the exact moment when sprint trains begin to assemble, and any attack launched here would force the sprint teams to burn their domestiques early. In other words, the race director placed a cat.4 here not with the intention of creating selection, but to create “decision pressure”—forcing sprint teams to decide, with 20 km still to go, whether they are willing to commit. Lidl-Trek clearly saw this coming.

Past Buxy (162.2 km), the route goes through Les Grands Champs (165.4 km), Les Ponts in Granges (167.7 km), Sienne-le-Haut in La Charmée (171.4 km), and Cortelin (173.9 km), passing through Saint-Rémy at 175.7 km before entering the city of Chalon-sur-Saône via the D906, reaching the finish line just past the 180 km mark.

The finish is a 1.6-kilometre dead-straight sprint, and it is a false flat.

The tactical significance of this finishing straight deserves its own explanation. Generally speaking, a long, straight sprint finish favours “teams with a full train,” because the train can push the pace to the limit in the final three kilometres, sealing off positioning space and making impromptu lane changes nearly impossible; but the “false flat” variable reshuffles the deck.

An uphill sprint extends the effective time from launching to crossing the line. On flat roads, a top-tier sprint is roughly 10 to 12 seconds of maximal output; on a false flat, the same 200 metres may take 13 to 15 seconds. Those extra three seconds fall precisely into the window where phosphocreatine system output begins to decline noticeably. The result: pure explosive sprinters with extremely short, high-peak bursts will show a clear power drop in the final 100 metres; conversely, endurance-oriented sprinters who can sustain high power for longer will, in the final 30 metres, pick off their rivals one by one.

This is also why, on this kind of finish, timing of the launch matters more than the size of the train. Launch too early, and the final uphill section will be a death sentence; launch too late, and the riders ahead have already opened up gaps, while the gradient makes it harder to close them down with relative speed. The result that evening was the perfect lesson in this principle: the team with the strongest lead-out of the day was overtaken simultaneously by two rivals who launched later and were better at “keeping something in reserve.”

Incidentally, the start on the F1 circuit was not purely ceremonial. The closed roads inside the circuit can accommodate all teams, support vehicles, and media, making the neutral zone long and stable, effectively giving the riders an extra ten-plus minutes of warm-up. This arrangement of “circling inside the circuit first, with the race only truly starting once through the gate” often makes the first hour after the official start particularly fast—because everyone’s legs are already open. The opening intensity that day was partly attributable to this factor as well.

Race Report (Part 1): Attacking from the Drop of the Flag, a Solo Breakaway by km 27

There was almost no warm-up period to the fighting after the official start. The moment the flag dropped, Mauro Schmid (Team Jayco AlUla) immediately surged out of the peloton, with Marco Haller (Tudor Pro Cycling Team), Van Wetsel, Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X Mobility) and a large group following. This list alone explains the nature of the day: Schmid is a typical all-rounder and regular breakaway rider, Haller is an experienced hardman, Abrahamsen is one of the most famous “full-time escapees” of recent years, and Van Wetsel is one of the most aggressive newcomers in this edition. When these names appear at the front simultaneously, it means no one wants to let the break settle easily—everyone wants to make sure they are in it.

What followed was a series of attacks and counter-attacks. This is the most draining phase of breakaway formation: it’s not about who rides fastest, but who can survive the fifth or sixth acceleration and still stand. The peloton’s average speed during this period often approaches or even exceeds 50 km/h, and any failure to keep up means the end of the day’s chances.

At km 27, Van Wetsel finally opened a gap and was alone at the front. This was his third breakaway in his debut Tour de France—the first two being a solo move on Stage 5 and riding alongside Jakub Otruba on Stage 7. A Tour debutant making three breakaways in twelve days is a statistic worth recording in itself; more crucially, each time he wasn’t “passively left at the front,” but was the one actively creating the gap.

A solo breakaway holds a peculiar position in the modern Tour. When the break consists of just one rider, the advantage is that the pace is entirely under your control, with no need to match anyone else’s through-and-off ability, and no worry about internal games before the finish; the disadvantage is extremely obvious—the efficiency gap in fighting air resistance alone versus in a group is roughly 30 to 40 percent. In practical terms, a solo rider needs to output nearly a third more power to maintain the same speed as a five-rider break. This is why the vast majority of solo breakaways don’t survive to the end.

But a solo move also has an advantage that’s hard to quantify: the psychological and broadcast value. The cameras will follow you all day, your team name will be mentioned dozens of times, and your name will appear at the bottom of every broadcast frame. For a mid-sized team, the commercial value of this exposure can sometimes rival a top-ten finish. Van Wetsel’s team, Lotto Intermarché, clearly understands this, and his own words are even more honest: “My job is to try.”

The sprint teams quickly took over the pace-setting. At km 43, the gap reached its day’s maximum—two minutes. The figure of two minutes is highly significant. For a solo rider, two minutes is the threshold of “just about to be caught”: it’s enough to sustain broadcast excitement, yet far from enough to pose a threat. The sprint teams only allowed two minutes not because they couldn’t chase down more, but because they knew giving more would cost them a higher price, while giving less would encourage others in the peloton to attack again.

This is the cruelest arithmetic of the modern Tour breakaway: when there’s only one rider at the front and three or more full sprint trains behind, the success rate approaches zero. For a real turnaround, at least one of these conditions usually needs to hold—enough riders in the break (four to six with aligned interests across teams), complex terrain (consecutive climbs or bad weather), sprint teams tripping over each other (no one willing to shoulder the chase cost alone), or a collective misjudgment by the peloton at some point. That day, none of these four conditions were met.

Race Report (Part 2): The Decize Intermediate Sprint, Pedersen’s 20-Point Calculation

The intermediate sprint at Decize (km 45.8) was the first real point of contention on the day.

Vanstraelen crossed the line first as the lone breakaway, taking the expected 25 points. The real focus was behind him: Pedersen was first across the line from the peloton, taking 20 points. Then came Philipsen with 16, Merlier with 14, Kanter (Max Kanter, XDS Astana Team) with 12, Girmay with 10, Davide Ballerini with 9, Liam Slock with 8, Dylan van Baarle with 7, Jenno Berckmoes with 6, Gaviria (Fernando Gaviria, Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) with 5, Simmons (Quinn Simmons, Lidl-Trek) with 4, Krists Neilands with 3, Ramses Debruyne with 2, and Tosh Van Asbroeck with 1.

Pedersen with 20 points, Philipsen with 16, Merlier with 14—the three main contenders for the green jersey are separated by just 6 points, yet they fought flat out for a prize with no money or placings on the line, still 134 kilometers from the finish. This is the essence of the green jersey war: it’s not a single sprint, but the compound interest of thirty-odd small investments over three weeks.

The significance of Pedersen grabbing 20 points here goes beyond the four-point lead on paper. It was a risk transfer. Because in the final bunch sprint, Pedersen’s odds against pure speedsters like Merlier and Kooij (Olav Kooij, Decathlon CMA CGM Team) are not in his favor; the intermediate sprint is where his relative advantage is greatest—no lead-out trains, no full positioning battle, just a short-range duel over who dares to launch first, and Pedersen’s explosiveness combined with endurance is often strongest in that chaos. He only managed 9th at the stage finish, but his green jersey balance sheet for the day was still positive—that’s the value of strategic positioning.

Working backwards from the result, the green jersey standings after S12 are: Pedersen 357, Girmay 317, Philipsen 311, Merlier 307. If you remove the 20 points from Decize, Pedersen’s lead would shrink directly from 40 points to 20, bringing Girmay and Philipsen within striking range. That’s how important a single intermediate sprint can be.

Another detail worth noting is Simmons taking 12th (4 points) at the intermediate sprint. A rider whose primary job is to protect his team leader, yet he still went for the 4 points on offer for 12th place—this usually signals two things: one, he was in exceptional form that day, and two, Lidl-Trek treats the intermediate sprint as a team operation, not just the leader’s personal business. Judging by the three consecutive attacks in the final 25 kilometers, that read was correct.

After the intermediate sprint, the peloton noticeably accelerated and the gap began to shrink. This acceleration was a signal to the riders behind: the gap ahead was closing, and the odds of a successful bridge were rising. Three riders immediately seized this window—Caruso (Damiano Caruso, Bahrain Victorious), Costiou (Ewen Costiou, Groupama-FDJ United), and Vercher (Matteo Vercher, TotalEnergies) caught Vanstraelen at kilometer 57.

The composition of this four-man group is intriguing. Caruso is a seasoned all-rounder, adept at sustained steady output; Costiou and Vercher are both young French attacking riders with strong motivation to perform in their home Grand Tour; Vanstraelen had already been riding solo for 30 kilometers up front. On paper, four riders rotating through pulls is far more efficient than one alone, and the breakaway’s survival odds should have improved dramatically.

But in reality, the timing of a successful bridge often determines the breakaway’s fate. If the bridge happens very early in the race (within the first 20 km), the break usually has a chance to build a gap of over five minutes; if it happens after the peloton has already settled into controlled pacing (like at km 57 today), then the break is doomed from the moment it forms—because the peloton’s rhythm is already set, and the break is merely running on the same rope in a more efficient formation.

The situation stabilized on the road toward Luzy (km 86.5). Merlier’s Soudal Quick-Step, Girmay’s NSN Cycling Team, and Philipsen’s Alpecin-Premier Tech cooperated in controlling the pace. Three teams sharing the chasing work is the ideal state for a sprint stage: no one is forced to burn alone, and no one gets a free ride. Once this tacit understanding forms, the breakaway’s room is compressed to the merely symbolic.

And the name Luzy carries another layer of meaning for French cycling fans—this is the hometown of Jean-François Bernard, the French star of the 1980s. He was once seen as Bernard Hinault’s heir and wore the yellow jersey. When the broadcast cameras sweep through this small town, the French commentary booth usually indulges in a moment of nostalgia; and on that same stretch of road, a young Frenchman was holding on alone up front. This juxtaposition is one of the most captivating aspects of Tour de France route design.

Race Report (Part 2): The Final 62 km — Lidl-Trek’s Full Assault and the Sprint Finish Decider

At 62 km from the finish, Van Rooy accelerated once more, and this time only Kostecki could follow. This was the second split he had instigated that day, and a classic example of gamesmanship within a breakaway: when you judge that the group won’t survive to the finish, the most rational move isn’t to conserve energy and wait, but to actively shed those least willing to commit, forcing the remaining riders to go all-in.

Once four became two, the gap didn’t actually improve significantly — which confirmed the earlier assessment: the problem wasn’t the breakaway’s rotation efficiency, but the pace-setting of the peloton. Entering the final 50 km, Kostecki sat up, waiting for the bunch to absorb him. It was a very pragmatic decision: when you know you can’t catch on, and you can’t win, continuing to burn matches out front only compromises your form for the next day. Van Rooy was alone again.

He rode on solo for roughly another 15 km, knowing full well it was a lost cause. From a purely competitive standpoint, the expected value of those 15 km was close to zero; but from the perspective of stage narrative and team interests, those 15 km earned him the day’s “Most Aggressive Rider” combativity award, and kept the Lotto Intermarché jersey on the broadcast for an extra half hour. His own words: “As long as I’m still here, nothing can stop me.”

When Van Rooy’s lead was nearly gone, Lidl-Trek struck.

The first wave was Simons’ attack. His objective was clear — to disrupt the rhythm of the pure sprint teams. When a rider with solo capabilities jumps clear with around 30 km to go, the sprint squads must react immediately: either send someone to chase (burning the legs of their final lead-out men), or lift the overall pace of the peloton (equally costly, and making the positioning battle even more chaotic). Whichever they chose, it favoured the side looking to “win the terrain battle” ahead.

The second wave was Mathias Vacek and Derek Gee piling on over the final climb, the Côte de Montagny-lès-Buxy (cat.4, at 159.4 km). Vacek duly took the single point at the summit. That point meant nothing in the grand scheme of the polka-dot jersey — the post-race leader remained Pogačar with 42 points — but it proved that Lidl-Trek was the only team genuinely doing the work on that stretch of road.

The third, and most direct, wave was Pedersen himself launching multiple attacks on the road towards Chalon-sur-Saône. The wire services described it as Lidl-Trek attacking repeatedly over the final 25 km, clearly trying to grind down the pure sprinters on the rolling terrain.

The logic of this script was complete: the final 20 km featured rolling hills through the vineyards with a narrowing road, and the finish itself was a slight uphill drag. Theoretically, if enough acceleration-deceleration cycles could be generated, the pure explosive sprinters — especially the heavier ones with relatively limited anaerobic endurance — would lose their lead-out trains in the last few kilometres, or even get dropped from the front group entirely. Historically, Pedersen himself had won spring classics and hilly Grand Tour stages using exactly this pattern.

But on the day, the peloton held firm. Three plausible reasons can be inferred.

First, the climbs weren’t hard enough. The Côte de Montagny-lès-Buxy was only a cat.4, and the steepest gradient on the entire stage barely exceeded 5%. To grind down a top sprinter, you don’t need one cat.4 — you need two or three consecutive climbs that force riders out of the saddle, or a sustained ascent of 3 km or more. The terrain offered too little leverage; the attackers couldn’t generate enough of an elevation differential.

Second, there were too many rivals with aligned interests. Soudal Quick-Step, Alpecin-Premier Tech, Decathlon CMA CGM, and NSN all still had full sprint plans intact that day, and any attack would be answered by at least two teams simultaneously. When four teams share the chasing burden, a single team’s attack is always a losing proposition on the energy ledger.

Third, the timing dilemma. If they went all-in on the climb at 159 km, there were still 20 km of flat and slightly rolling roads left — too easy to bring back; if they waited until the final 10 km, the road had already narrowed and the peloton was at full speed, making it impossible to jump clear. The terrain of this stage offered no “just right” launch window — that was a consequence of the route design, not an execution error.

So the race entered the final kilometre. Alpecin-Premier Tech took over the front, with Mathieu Van der Poel personally launching Philipsen. It was theoretically the final turn of the world’s strongest sprint train: a former road world champion and one of the greatest one-day riders of all time, opening a clean lane for his teammate in the last 500 metres.

Then the script flipped. Merlier and Kooij both swept past Philipsen, with Merlier taking the win by a narrow margin.

Why? Go back to that 1.6 km slightly uphill straight. This “connection between place and person” is one of the core elements of the Tour as a French national event, and one of the things that most sets it apart from other races.

Montceau-les-Mines and Blanzy: Burgundy’s coal and industrial memory. The route passes through this area between kilometers 126 and 133. It’s evident from the name itself—Montceau-les-Mines literally means “Montceau of the mines.” This was once an important coal mining and industrial belt in central France, and the rise and fall of the mining industry shaped the entire town’s appearance and demographics. That’s precisely why Lidl-Trek chose to attack here—not just because there’s a climb, but because the narrow roads amplify the effect of an attack.

Finish: Chalon-sur-Saône. This is the sub-prefecture of the Saône-et-Loire department and an important wine town and cultural city in Burgundy. But its most famous identity in world history is as the hometown of Nicéphore Niépce, the inventor of photography. Niépce created the earliest permanent photographic images in the 1820s, and the city still houses a museum named after him.

A city where imagery was born, serving as the finish of the world’s most broadcast cycling race—this is a coincidence the Tour’s editorial team would never let pass. And for fans, there’s another, more direct piece of race history worth remembering:

The most famous connection between Chalon-sur-Saône and the Tour de France dates to 1959. That year, the Tour used Chalon-sur-Saône as a stage finish for the first time, and the winner was British rider Brian Robinson—making him the first British rider ever to win a Tour de France stage. In an era when Britain barely existed in European professional cycling, this was almost unthinkable, and it became one of the starting points of the entire British road cycling tradition. Lesson 1: For long-distance cruising pace, the key isn’t average speed—it’s variability.

S12’s average speed was close to 49 km/h, which sounds like a full-on hammerfest, but the actual power distribution of the pro peloton was nothing like that. Riders in the group spent most of their time outputting far below their threshold, with the real high-intensity efforts concentrated in the opening hour, around the intermediate sprint, and in the final 25 kilometers. This “low-low-low-high” distribution is the common structure of all long-distance races.

The most common mistake Taiwanese cyclists make is letting power follow the terrain on rolling roads: push hard on the climbs, rest on the descents. This riding style drives up your power variability index (VI), and at the same average power, the greater the variability, the faster fatigue accumulates. The correct approach is the opposite—ease off slightly on the climbs, push a bit more on the descents and flats, trading speed variation for power stability. This is especially obvious on the rolling terrain of the Miaoli section of Provincial Highway 3: if you stand and sprint up every short climb, your legs will be done after two hours; if you stay seated on each short climb and maintain a steady output, you can ride another fifty kilometers on the same road.

Lesson 2: The key to rhythm management on rolling terrain lies “after the crest.”

Watch how the pro peloton handles a cat.4 climb, and you’ll notice one thing: they don’t ease off and rest at the summit—instead, they keep accelerating for the first twenty seconds after crossing the crest. This isn’t self-punishment; it’s about efficiency—the gravity assist after the crest means the same power buys more speed, making it the “highest return on investment” twenty seconds of the entire stretch. In contrast, the typical amateur habit is to relax immediately at the summit and wait for breathing to settle, which means having to build speed back up from scratch every time—resulting in higher overall energy expenditure.

County Road 139 is the best venue to practice this. Its profile is a series of short climbs and short descents. If you adopt the “relax immediately at the crest” mode, the whole ride will feel like a roller coaster—fast and slow by turns; if you adopt the “push for twenty seconds after the crest” mode, your average speed for the whole ride will noticeably improve, without necessarily feeling harder. County Road 182 in Tainan has similar characteristics, though with gentler grades and longer distances, making it suitable for practicing “long-duration cruising at a steady output.”

Lesson 3: The value of drafting is far greater than you think.

As mentioned earlier, a solo rider needs roughly 30–40% more power to maintain the same speed as the group. This figure holds true for amateur riders as well—and is even more exaggerated due to differences in position and equipment. Wærenskjold’s day-long solo breakaway was doomed precisely because of this physical reality.

Conversely, this also means: learning to draft properly in a group ride is the cheapest performance upgrade available. You don’t need a lighter bike or more expensive wheels—just shorten your wheel gap from one meter to thirty centimeters (provided safety and mutual trust allow it), and the energy saved will outweigh thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment upgrades. Of course, this presupposes skill and trust—which leads neatly to the next topic.

Lesson 4: Separate “easy terrain” from “easy stage.”

S12 had only 1,300 to 1,800 meters of climbing, yet the riders spent nearly three hours and forty minutes on the bike at an average of 49 km/h. Back in the Taiwanese context, a half-island loop or a full West Coast long-distance ride may not have much climbing either, but four to six hours of sustained cruising demands just as much from the body as a full Wuling climb.

This has a direct implication for fueling strategy: low-climbing long days are actually the most prone to under-fueling. Because the perceived effort isn’t hard, people forget to eat; yet carbohydrate depletion doesn’t happen any slower. Pro riders still maintain a carbohydrate intake of 60 to 90 grams per hour on stages like this. If an amateur rider does a four-hour flat long ride on just two energy bars, the late-race fade in the final hour is almost inevitable.

First, understand the nature of the crash: it’s not speed—it’s density times speed.

A rider descending at 60 km/h alone, on a clean road with clear visibility, faces manageable risk; but a hundred riders moving side by side at 60 km/h with less than ten centimeters between wheels—any tiny disturbance gets amplified into a chain reaction. Pro riders are the best in the world at handling this density, and they still crash. That’s why.

For Taiwan’s major events—Sun Moon Lake Come!Bike Day, road-closure challenge rides across the country, and various thousand-rider group rides—the most dangerous moments are often not the steepest climbs, but the first kilometer after the start and the last kilometer before the finish. The former is everyone packed together, adrenaline high, not yet spread out; the latter is everyone fighting for time, fatigue already accumulated, and judgment impaired. The crash rate in these two windows is far higher than anywhere in the middle of the route.

A few principles you can apply immediately:

  1. Don’t make sudden lateral moves when changing position in the pack. Most chain-reaction crashes start with an unannounced drift. To change position, check behind first, signal with your hand, then move slowly.
  2. Braking isn’t your only speed-control tool. In a dense pack, a light touch of the brakes transmits the deceleration signal directly to the five riders behind you. Prioritize “sitting up into the wind” or “edging slightly out of the draft” to fine-tune your speed, and save the brakes for when you truly need them.
  3. Look far ahead. Staring at the wheel in front of you is the most common mistake. You should be watching the shoulders and head movements of the third to fifth riders ahead—signals appear there earlier than at the wheel directly in front.
  4. Know your limits, and be honest about them. If you find yourself needing full effort just to hold the wheel in front of you, your margin is already zero—and margin is exactly what you need to handle unexpected situations. Staying in the pack in that state is a risk to both yourself and others.
  5. Don’t risk it for a few seconds before the finish. This is the hardest to execute but the most important. Pro riders take risks for placings and contracts—that’s their job; in amateur events, your finishing time has no real impact on your life, but a crash can keep you off the bike for three months.

Comparable Taiwanese routes and scenarios

If I had to pick a route in Taiwan with “the road profile closest to S12,” I’d nominate Provincial Highway 3, from Miaoli to Taichung: long distance, continuous medium and small rollers, decent road surface, capable of sustaining a high average speed, and with noticeable crosswinds on certain sections. Using it to practice the combination of “steady-power cruising + twenty seconds of acceleration after the crest” is the closest training match to this stage.

County Road 139 is suitable for simulating the final 20 kilometers of this stage—that combination of “narrow road + consecutive short climbs + corners.” On this type of terrain, positioning and rhythm matter more than raw power—which is exactly what Lidl-Trek was trying to exploit, and what the sprint trains had to defend against.

County Road 182 in Tainan’s long, gentle climbs are good for practicing extended sub-threshold output, corresponding to the most grinding section of this stage—the industrial-zone cruising between kilometers 100 and 150.

The half-island loop is the closest full experience to “a whole day of low climbing but long-duration cruising,” where fueling rhythm, crosswind handling, and maintaining long-duration focus are all required skills.

Sun Moon Lake Come!Bike Day and similar mass events are the venues for practicing pack safety and group-riding etiquette. Keep the image of S12’s final kilometer in your mind—that’s the world’s most elite riders, on the most ideal closed roads, and it still happened.

Conclusion: A Day Without a Change in the Jerseys, and Three Names Worth Remembering

At the end of Stage 12, the owners of the four leader’s jerseys had not changed, the top twenty on the general classification remained in the same order, and the top of the polka-dot jersey standings was still the man in yellow. From a data perspective, this was one of the “quietest” days of the 21 days of the Tour de France.

But if you watched from start to finish, you will remember three names.

Westerhof, a Tour debutant, jumped into the breakaway for the third time in his first Grand Tour, rode alone for most of the day, and took the 25 points at the intermediate sprint, the summits of two cat.4 climbs, the day’s combativity award, and the Best Teammate award from the first week.
