26 Stage Wins Across Seven Tours
From 2020 to 2026, Tadej Pogačar has accumulated 26 stage wins at the Tour de France. What makes this number remarkable isn’t just the quantity, but the fact that it covers nearly every type of stage the Tour has to offer: high-mountain climbs, rolling mid-mountain terrain, solo breakaways, and uphill sprint finishes.
For Taiwanese cyclists, think of it this way: this isn’t “someone who’s very good at climbing Wuling,” but rather someone who can beat you on Wuling, Beiyi, and Fengguizui, and is also no pushover in a flat sprint.
2020: One Debut, Three Jerseys
Pogačar rode his first Tour de France in 2020 and rewrote the script outright: he took the overall title, the King of the Mountains, and the Best Young Rider in the same edition.
The rarity of this needs some explanation. The scoring logic of these three jerseys pulls against each other:
- The overall title demands precise pacing and no wasted effort across the entire race;
- The King of the Mountains demands actively contesting points at summit lines, often burning energy at non-decisive moments;
- The Best Young Rider is an age-restricted award, which in itself means you’ve accomplished the first two feats with minimal Tour experience.
He is the only rider in history to sweep all three — and he did it again in 2021.
From Back-to-Back Wins, to Defeat, to Back-to-Back Again
| Year | Tour de France Result |
|---|---|
| 2020 | Overall Champion (+ King of the Mountains + Best Young Rider) |
| 2021 | Overall Champion (+ King of the Mountains + Best Young Rider) |
| 2022 | Runner-up (lost to Jonas Vingegaard) |
| 2023 | Runner-up (lost to Jonas Vingegaard) |
| 2024 | Overall Champion |
| 2025 | Overall Champion |
| 2026 | Overall Champion |
Losing to Jonas Vingegaard two years in a row in 2022 and 2023 is the most important stretch on this timeline. It turned a story that was “winning to the point of boredom” into a genuine rivalry — which is why their duel is widely regarded as one of the greatest rivalries in modern road cycling.
Then he came back — and came back for three straight years. In 2026, Pogačar claimed his 5th Tour de France overall title, becoming the 5th rider in history to reach five wins, joining Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, and Miguel Indurain.
Also, Stage 4 of the 2025 Tour was his career’s 100th victory.
2026 Tour: A Five-Stage Harvest
The 2026 Tour de France started in Barcelona, Spain, and Pogačar took 5 stage wins in this edition:
S3|Granollers → Les Angles
The decisive strike after the race concluded its opening leg in Spain.
S6|Pau → Gavarnie-Gèdre (Tourmalet)
A classic Pyrenean pass. In stages like this — “over the Tourmalet first, then finishing higher up” — the question is whether you have the reserves to keep accelerating on the final climb.
S10|Aurillac → Le Lioran
Bastille Day stage. A victory on France’s national holiday carries special weight at the Tour, and it’s typically the day with the most ferocious attacking.
S14|Mulhouse → Le Markstein-Fellering
Soloed 7.2 km to the finish at the Col du Hahnenberg. Holding the advantage after a solo move of over 7 km proves not just explosive power, but the sustained output required after launching an attack.
S19|Gap → Alpe d’Huez
Alpe d’Huez is one of the most mythic mountaintop finishes in Tour history. Reuters timed him at 35 minutes 27 seconds, reporting it as a record-breaking time, more than a minute faster than Marco Pantani’s previous mark.
For Taiwanese cyclists, the intensity of Alpe d’Huez’s 21 hairpin bends can roughly be compared to “pedaling continuously for half an hour on the steepest sections of Wuling without catching your breath.” Note that professional climbing records are produced with full team support, race dynamics, and equipment optimization — recreational riders need not and should not benchmark their own split times against them.
What 26 Stage Wins Mean
Stage wins and the overall title prove two different things. The overall title proves you “don’t break down over three weeks”; a stage win proves you “were stronger than everyone on a given day.” A rider stacking both to this magnitude is a rare combination in history.
And remember, in 2022 and 2023 he didn’t win the overall. That means these 26 stage wins were accumulated across a timeline that includes two “failed seasons” — even in years when he lost the big picture, he was still the rider who would win stages.
A Note for Taiwanese Cyclists
The distribution of these 26 stage wins reveals something that holds true for amateur riders as well: the ability to win races and the ability to “not break down” are two separate systems.
- To perform well in a single-day event, you train attacking and short-duration high output;
- To hold up over multi-day endurance (such as a Taiwan round-island tour or several consecutive days in the mountains), you train recovery, fueling, and pacing discipline.
You need both, but you can’t peak at both in the same training cycle. When planning your annual schedule, decide which is the main focus this year and relegate the other to a secondary position — that’s often more effective than trying to have everything. Training results vary from person to person; increase intensity progressively.
