Why You Can’t Just Copy What Pro Riders Use

The third force—and the most valuable reference—is what that day’s race actually requires.
Pogačar’s 2026 season happened to provide two extreme contrasts:
- Strade Bianche (March 7): On the white gravel roads of Tuscany, Italy, he attacked with 78 km remaining on the Monte Sante Marie gravel sector, rode solo all the way to the finish, and took his 4th career win in the event.
- Paris-Roubaix (April 12): On the cobblestones of northern France, he suffered a puncture with 120 km remaining, changed bikes twice during the race, and chased for over twenty kilometers just to get back to the main group; he later changed bikes once more, and ultimately lost the sprint to Wout van Aert in the velodrome, finishing second.
Same rider, same season, yet the equipment challenges were completely different. Gravel demands grip and rolling efficiency; cobblestones demand survival and impact resistance. And those three bike changes at Paris-Roubaix also proved a point: on the worst roads, equipment reliability is itself part of the result.

Many people buy a climbing-focused bike when they actually spend 80% of their year on riverside paths and flat group rides; others buy an aero-first setup but head to Beiyi, Fengguizui, or Wuling every weekend. Choosing the wrong equipment usually isn’t about buying something bad—it’s about buying something good that doesn’t match your actual usage scenario.
