The second point is often overlooked, yet it is frequently the decisive factor. Many races are cancelled not because “athletes can’t ride,” but because “if something goes wrong, we can’t rescue them.” Rockfalls in the mountains, road closures, visibility too low for helicopters to fly, and mass casualties exceeding medical capacity—these are all real reasons for stopping a race.

Lightning deserves special emphasis: it is one of the few weather risks that no personal equipment can protect you from. On ridgelines, open farmland, and riverside bike paths—terrain without shelter—the correct response is to leave high ground and open areas as quickly as possible, stay away from isolated tall objects, and enter a building or a hard-topped vehicle. This is why many races list lightning as one of the highest-priority triggers for stopping the event.


3. The Decision Timeline: It’s Not Just “Run” or “Don’t Run”

  • You had a cold this week and still have a cough
  • You have pre-existing cardiovascular or respiratory conditions
  • Your descending skills aren’t sufficient for wet, slippery mountain roads
  • Your gear isn’t sufficient for the day’s temperatures
  • You have no experience riding long distances in the rain
  • You only slept three hours last night

Any one of the above is enough reason to say “I’m not racing today.” The entry fee is a sunk cost; your body is not.

Conversely, if the race is cancelled and you think the weather is actually fine, please don’t gather a group and ride the same route for a “self-supported finish.” When a race is cancelled, traffic control, aid stations, and medical support no longer exist, and the risks of that route haven’t disappeared either—the risk is actually higher.


8. Common Misconceptions

Misconception 1: “The weather looks fine, the organizer must be trying to save money.”
Decisions are often based not on “the weather right now” but on “the weather two hours from now” and “rescue capability.” The blue sky you see at the start area can be completely different from conditions at the summit.

Misconception 2: “A reroute means a watered-down race; the organizer has no integrity.”
A reroute is usually the organizer’s compromise between “cancel” and “hold as planned,” requiring more manpower. Re-planning a route means traffic control, aid stations, distance markers, and timing points all have to be redone.

Misconception 3: “Force majeure is the organizer’s get-out-of-jail-free card.”
The force majeure clause protects against “uncontrollable factors,” not “decision delays” and “communication failures.” Those two will still be scrutinized.

Misconception 4: “After the stop, I’ll just finish on my own.”
