How to Design Your Own Annual Training Plan: A Scientific Approach Working Backward from Your Goals

Why Do You Need an Annual Plan?

Training without a plan is like driving without a map—you might reach somewhere, but not necessarily where you want to go. An annual training plan allows you to:

  1. Set clear goals: Know why you’re training
  2. Allocate wisely: Put limited time to the best use
  3. Prevent overtraining: Schedule recovery deliberately
  4. Track progress: You need a baseline to know if you’re improving

Step 1: Identify Your A-Race

Choose 1-2 of the most important races per year, and treat other events as training races:

Common A-Races for Taiwanese cyclists:

  • SSU TV Wuling (September)
  • Taiwan KOM (October-November)
  • L’Étape Sun Moon Lake (October)
  • Climbing Grand Slam (March)

Step 2: Work Backwards from Race Day

Using Taiwan KOM (early November) as an example:

Period Months Duration Training Focus
Transition Nov-Dec 4-6 weeks Rest & recovery, cross-training
Base Dec-Feb 12 weeks Aerobic base, strength training
Build Mar-May 12 weeks Sweet Spot, threshold improvement
First Race Period Jun-Jul 8 weeks Sharpening, spring races
Re-Build Jul-Aug 8 weeks Continued improvement, high intensity
Final Race Period Sep-Nov 8-10 weeks Specific training, tapering

Step 3: Set Quantifiable Mid-Term Goals

Set measurable goals for each training period:

End of Period FTP Target Longest Single Ride
End of Base +5% 3 hours Zone 2
End of Build +10% 4 hours with climbing
Before Final Race +15% Full race simulation

Step 4: Design Your Training Week

Base Period Weekly Template:

Day Training Duration Intensity
Monday Rest
Tuesday Zone 2 Ride 75 min Z2
Wednesday Strength Training 60 min Moderate-High
Thursday Zone 2 Ride 60 min Z2
Friday Strength Training 60 min Moderate-High
Saturday Long Ride 2.5-4 hours Z2
Sunday Recovery Ride 60 min Z1

Build Period Weekly Template:

Day Training Description
Monday Rest
Tuesday Threshold Training 4x8 min @ FTP
Wednesday Zone 2 90 min
Thursday Sweet Spot 2x20 min @ 90% FTP
Friday Recovery Ride or Rest
Saturday Long Ride with Climbing 3-4 hours
Sunday Zone 2 2 hours

Step 5: Schedule Recovery Weeks

Schedule a recovery week every 3-4 weeks:

  • Reduce training volume by 40-50%
  • Drop intensity to Zone 1-2
  • Use this week to monitor body metrics (HRV, weight, perceived exertion)
Tool Purpose Cost
Training Peaks Complete training plan management Free/NT$500 per month
intervals.icu Data analysis, full-featured free version Free
Excel/Google Sheets Custom progress tracking Free
Strava Ride logging and community Free/NT$250 per month

Flexible Plan Adjustments

An annual plan is not set in stone:

  • Review actual training volume vs. plan monthly
  • Rest decisively when sick; don’t push through
  • Occasionally accept unexpected opportunities (a colleague invites you to climb)
  • Proactively cut training when HRV stays low

The purpose of a plan is to give you direction, not to become a straitjacket. Flexible but focused is the best annual planning strategy.
