國際單車

Mallorca: The Mediterranean Cycling Training Sanctuary

Every January and February, while most of Europe remains covered in winter snow, the roads of Mallorca are packed with professional cyclists from around the world. This Spanish Mediterranean island has become the world’s most important winter training base.

Why Mallorca?

Climate Advantage

Month Average Temperature Rainy Days
January 12-16°C 8 days
February 13-17°C 7 days
March 15-19°C 7 days

While the rest of Europe can only endure indoor trainers, Mallorca offers an excellent outdoor riding environment.

Terrain Diversity

Mallorca’s terrain provides almost every training need:

  • Serra de Tramuntana mountains: Mountainous terrain in the northwest, offering climbing training
  • Central island plains: Extended flat roads, suitable for time trials and endurance training
  • Coastal roads: Scenic with gentle gradients

Main Training Routes

Sa Calobra

  • Distance: 9.5 km
  • Elevation gain: 880 m
  • Average gradient: 7% (max 13%)
  • Feature: A winding coastal cliffside route, Mallorca’s most famous climb

Puig Major

  • Route near Mallorca’s highest peak (1,436 m)
  • Long-distance climb, suitable for extended aerobic training

Cap de Formentor

  • Gentle roads at the tip of the peninsula
  • Spectacular scenery, a must-ride pilgrimage

Professional Team Training Camps

Every winter, nearly all WorldTour professional teams hold training camps in Mallorca:

  • Team Ineos (now Team Ineos Grenadiers): Has used Mallorca as its winter training base for years
  • UAE Team Emirates: Tadej Pogačar’s team opens its season here every year
  • Jumbo-Visma (now Visma-Lease a Bike): Jonas Vingegaard’s team

Amateur Training Camp Options

Joining a Professional Training Camp

Several cycling tour operators offer amateur training camps in Mallorca:

  • Cost: Approximately €2,000-5,000 (including accommodation, meals, coaching)
  • Duration: 5-10 days
  • Services: Daily training plans, power testing, bike fitting

Self-Guided Training Planning

If going independently, it is recommended to:

  1. Choose accommodation in Alcúdia or Port de Pollença (north), closest to the main training routes
  2. Bring your own bike (airline checked baggage) or rent a high-end model locally
  3. Book a trainer such as the Wahoo KICKR for indoor backup (occasional rain)

Mallorca Trip Planning for Taiwanese Cyclists

Late January to mid-March: Most pleasant temperatures, most professional team activity, with chances to encounter star riders

Getting There

Taiwan → connecting flight in Europe → Palma de Mallorca (PMI) airport, typically a 15-20 hour journey

Cost Estimate (10 days/person)

Item Estimated Cost
Flights (round trip) 45,000-65,000 TWD
