Dolomites: A Cycling Journey in Paradise

The Dolomites are a UNESCO World Heritage Site in northeastern Italy, renowned for their vertical white limestone cliffs, verdant valleys, and alpine lakes. This is also one of the most spectacular cycling destinations in the world.

The Major Passes of the Dolomites

Passo Giau

  • Elevation: 2,236 meters
  • Difficulty: ★★★★★
  • Highlights: Near Cortina, with views of the Tre Cime throughout the climb; one of the most beautiful passes in the Dolomites

Passo Fedaia

  • Elevation: 2,057 meters
  • Highlights: An artificial reservoir at the summit, with the Marmolada glacier in sight

Passo Pordoi

  • Elevation: 2,239 meters
  • Highlights: One of the most famous passes in the Dolomites, frequently used by the Giro

Passo Sella

  • Elevation: 2,244 meters
  • Highlights: Can be linked with the Pordoi to form a loop route

The Sellaronda

The Sellaronda is one of the most famous cycling loop routes in the Dolomites, connecting four major passes:

  • Passo Sella → Passo Gardena → Passo Campolongo → Passo Pordoi → Return
  • Approximately 50 km in total, with about 1,500 meters of climbing
  • Moderate difficulty with spectacular scenery, suitable for amateur riders

Getting to the Dolomites

Transportation: Fly to Venice (VCE) or Innsbruck (INN), then rent a car for about 2–3 hours to reach the area
Best Season: June to September (some passes close after October due to snow)
Accommodation Recommendations: Cortina d’Ampezzo or Canazei, both offering excellent lodging and cycling facilities
