Taiwan’s Unique Advantages for Trail Running

Despite its small size, Taiwan is home to over 260 peaks above 3,000 meters, making it one of the regions with the highest mountain density in the world. Taiwan’s trail running routes range from trails at just a few dozen meters above sea level to high-mountain forest roads above 3,000 meters, offering a diversity that is second to none in Asia.

Taipingshan Trail Running Routes

Cuifeng Lake is the largest alpine lake in Taiwan. The loop trail passes through old-growth cypress forests and arrow bamboo grasslands, offering expansive views. The trail is generally well-maintained, with a mix of dirt paths and stone slabs, making it suitable for trail running beginners.

Notes:

  • An entrance ticket to Taipingshan Recreation Area is required (or an annual pass)
  • Parking must be reserved in advance on holidays during peak season
  • Visibility may be poor during the foggy season (October–March)
  • Afternoon thunderstorms are common; an early start is recommended
