Marathon Registration Strategy: How to Grab a Spot in Popular Races

The Taipei Marathon, Standard Chartered Taipei Marathon, and Taroko Gorge Marathon — registration for these popular races often sells out within minutes, or even seconds. For many runners, “winning a registration slot” has become a challenge in its own right, separate from the race itself.

The Current State of Marathon Registration in Taiwan

Why Is It Getting Harder to Register?

Over the past decade, Taiwan’s road running market has continued to expand:

  • 2010: approximately 80 running events nationwide
  • 2015: over 300 events
  • 2019: over 600 events

Although the total number of events has grown, demand for a handful of “flagship races” far exceeds supply:

Race Registration Opens Approx. Sell-Out Time
Taroko Gorge Marathon 1 year in advance Lottery system
Taipei Marathon 6 months in advance Days to 2 weeks
Mt. Fuji Marathon (Japan) 1 year in advance Lottery system
Tokyo Marathon 1-year advance lottery Lottery system

Registration Mechanisms for Major Taiwan Races

First-Come, First-Served

Some races open registration on a first-come, first-served basis. In this case:

Technical preparation:

  1. Confirm the registration site in advance: Locate the official registration page, not a third-party or resale link
  2. Log into your account beforehand: Make sure you’re already logged in before registration opens, to cut down on the time needed to fill in details
  3. Have your credit card info ready: Link a fast payment method (such as Apple Pay)
  4. Stand by on multiple devices: Have both a computer and a phone open, and submit on whichever succeeds first

Special notes:

  • When traffic is heavy, you may need to refresh (F5) multiple times
  • Don’t hesitate — once you’re sure you want in, confirm immediately
  • Use a stable network connection (avoid public Wi-Fi)

Lottery System

Some highly sought-after races use a lottery mechanism, such as the Taroko Marathon:

  • Complete the “lottery application” within the specified time window
  • The organizer runs a computerized lottery draw to fairly allocate spots
  • Complete payment within the specified time after winning a slot

Ways to improve your odds:

  • Fill in all information completely and correctly (incomplete entries may be automatically excluded)
  • Some races give weighted odds to “veterans” (repeat unsuccessful applicants)
  • Make sure to use real information (fake information can get you disqualified)

An Unplanned Option: Waitlists

Many people don’t realize that most races have a waitlist mechanism:

  1. After registration closes, some registered runners withdraw for various reasons, freeing up spots
  2. 2–4 weeks before the race, organizers open “waitlist transfers”
  3. Waitlist information can be found on official platforms (such as Sports Note)

Registering for the World Marathon Majors

The World Marathon Majors (Boston, Tokyo, London, Berlin, Chicago, and New York) are the ultimate goal for many runners, and each has a different registration method:

Race Primary Registration Method Taiwan Quota
Boston Marathon Qualifying time No special quota — based on performance
Tokyo Marathon Lottery + travel agency packages Travel agency package slots available
London Marathon Lottery Separate application route for overseas runners
Berlin Marathon Lottery Overseas application channel available
Chicago Marathon Lottery Non-lottery options for overseas runners
New York Marathon Lottery / charity slots / qualifying time Travel agency packages

Boston Marathon Qualifying Times (2024)

Age Group Male Female
18-34 3:00:00 3:30:00
35-39 3:05:00 3:35:00
40-44 3:10:00 3:40:00
45-49 3:20:00 3:50:00

Note: Because so many runners meet the standard, you typically need to beat the qualifying time by 5 minutes or more to be reasonably sure of getting in.

A Reasonable Timeline of Expectations

For recreational runners, here’s a reasonable timeline for planning your race progression:

  1. Getting started (goal: finish the race): Choose smaller, easier-to-register races
  2. 1-2 years in: Larger races such as the Taipei Marathon or Tainan Ancient Capital Marathon
  3. 3 years in (with a PB under your belt): Try one of the Majors or an extreme race

Registering for a race is part of the marathon journey — and the tension of the scramble for a spot can itself be a source of motivation.
