Wuling Xijin 8-Week Training Plan: A Beginner’s Progressive Program from Zero to Finish

Many cyclists get intimidated just hearing “Wuling Xijin,” but with gradual progression and avoiding overtraining, 8 weeks is enough to go from “only ever ridden flat city roads” to “finished Wuling.” This plan is designed for beginners starting around 2.2-2.5 W/kg FTP.

Plan Prerequisites

  • You have at least 6-8 hours available for cycling each week
  • You have completed at least one 50 km flat-road ride
  • You are in good health with no cardiopulmonary conditions
  • You have obtained an FTP test result

8-Week Overview

Week Focus Weekly Distance Weekly Hours Key Points
1 Base Building 80 km 5 h Z2 endurance, no intensity
2 Base Building 100 km 6 h Add one climbing session
3 Climbing Intro 120 km 7 h Introduce 3-5% grade mountain roads
4 Intensity Buildup 140 km 8 h Short Z4 tempo intervals
5 Long Endurance 160 km 9 h Challenge a continuous 80 km ride
6 Peak Simulation 180 km 10 h Mock race: 100 km + 1,500m of climbing
7 Taper Week 120 km 6 h Slight intensity reduction, keep rhythm
8 Pre-Race Taper 60 km 3 h Easy rides only, finish Wuling

Sample Weekly Schedule (Week 4)

  • Monday: Rest or 30 minutes of easy spinning
  • Tuesday: 1-hour indoor intervals (10 min warm-up + 4 × 5 min @ Z4, 3 min recovery between sets → 10 min cool-down)
  • Wednesday: 1-hour Z2 flat recovery ride
  • Thursday: Rest + 30 minutes of core training
  • Friday: 1-hour climbing workout (find a continuous 20-minute climb, do 2 sets, recover on the descent between sets)
  • Saturday: Long 3.5-hour Z2 ride, including 1-2 sets of 10-minute Z3 tempo segments
  • Sunday: 1-hour recovery ride + stretching

Key Weekly Workout Notes

Z2 Endurance Rides (Every Week)

  • Heart rate: 65-75% of max HR
  • Power: 56-75% of FTP
  • You should be able to hold a normal conversation
  • Purpose: build mitochondrial density and fat-oxidation efficiency

Z4 Tempo Intervals (Weeks 4-6)

  • Heart rate: 89-94% of max HR
  • Power: 91-105% of FTP
  • 5-10 minutes per interval
  • Purpose: raise your lactate threshold

Climbing Repeats (Weeks 3-6)

  • Find mountain roads with 5-7% grade and 10-15 minutes in length
  • Cadence 60-75 rpm (simulating Wuling conditions)
  • Fully recover on the descent between sets
  • Purpose: build low-cadence strength and mental resilience

For riders based in Taipei: Fengguizui + Balaka + Yangjin “P” loop
For riders based in Taichung: Taichung → Guguan → Dayuling (but do not push all the way to Wuling itself)

Key goal: accumulate a continuous ride of 100 km with 1,500m of climbing, and check whether your fueling and gear hold up smoothly.

Fueling Practice (Starting Week 4)

For every ride over 2 hours, practice your actual race-day fueling:

  • Eat an energy gel or bar every 30-40 minutes
  • Drink 100-150ml of water every 15-20 minutes
  • For rides over 2 hours, add electrolyte drinks

Eating this way during training — not just on race day — is what keeps your stomach from revolting on race day.

Keys to the Final Two Weeks (Taper)

  • Week 7: Reduce distance by 30%, keep intensity
  • Week 8: Reduce distance by 60%, do short intervals on Wednesday to keep your nervous system sharp
  • Complete rest 2 days before the race
  • 30-minute ride with a few 15-second sprints the day before the race

Common Mistakes

  1. ❌ Zero rest days per week → overtraining, burning out before race day
  2. ❌ Riding all-out every time → insufficient recovery, no real progression
  3. ❌ Back-to-back long rides both weekend days → poor quality on the second day
  4. ❌ Skipping fueling practice → GI distress during the race
  5. ❌ Buying new gear the last week → equipment failures with unfamiliar equipment

Conclusion

Eight weeks of training isn’t magic, but it really can take most healthy adults from zero to the top of Wuling. The key is consistency, gradual progression, and recovery. Follow this plan, and 8 weeks from now, when you’re standing at the Wuling observation deck taking your victory photo, you’ll thank the version of yourself who decided to start 8 weeks earlier.
