Westbound Wuling Bike Computer Setup: 8 Essential Fields for a Climbing-Specific Data Page

Modern bike computers (Garmin, Wahoo, Hammerhead) are powerful, but too much data actually scatters your attention. What should you actually be looking at on Wuling (武嶺)? This article walks you through the 8 key fields.

Design Principles

  1. Everything on one page (avoid the distraction of flipping pages)
  2. Large font size (so you can glance quickly while riding)
  3. Key metrics in the center
  4. Secondary references in the corners

The 8 Essential Fields

1. Current Power

  • Position: Top-left, large font
  • Why: The core metric for pacing Wuling
  • Advanced tip: Set to 3s average to reduce jumpiness

2. Current Heart Rate

  • Position: Mid-left, medium font
  • Why: The “health warning light” for your power output
  • Tip: Pair with heart rate zone display (Z2/Z3/Z4)

3. Current Cadence

  • Position: Top-right, medium font
  • Why: If it drops below 70 while climbing, you should shift to a lower gear

4. Current Speed

  • Position: Mid-right, medium font
  • Why: Not critical, but helps with your mental state

5. Current Elevation

  • Position: Top-center, medium font
  • Why: A key strategic reference point for Wuling
  • Tip: Use it together with heart rate compensation

6. Cumulative Distance

  • Position: Bottom-center, medium font
  • Why: Know how far you’ve ridden and how much is left

7. Elapsed Time

  • Position: Bottom-left, small font
  • Why: Check whether your pacing is on target

8. Total Ascent

  • Position: Bottom-right, small font
  • Why: Psychological encouragement on Wuling (a sense of cumulative achievement)

Data You Should Not Put on the Main Page

  • Navigation arrows: Distracting — put them on a second page instead
  • Temperature: Not critical
  • Wind speed: Unreliable
  • Phone notifications: Turn them off!
  • GPS accuracy: Meaningless

Garmin Setup Steps

Edge 530 / 830 / 1040

  1. MenuActivity ProfilesData Screens
  2. Add New Data Screen → choose the 8-field template
  3. Set the 8 fields in order:
    • Top-left: Power (3-second average)
    • Top-center: Elevation
    • Top-right: Cadence
    • Mid-left: Heart Rate
    • Mid-center: Empty (or heart rate zone)
    • Mid-right: Speed
    • Bottom-left: Time
    • Bottom-center: Distance
    • Bottom-right: Total Ascent
  4. Hide any other unnecessary screens

Wahoo Bolt Setup

  1. Wahoo ELEMNT Companion AppSettings
  2. Workout Screens → add a Climbing screen
  3. Apply the 8-Metric Layout
  4. Set the same 8 fields

Hammerhead Karoo Setup

  1. App menu → add a custom page
  2. Choose an 8-field layout
  3. Tap each field to set its data type

Page 2: Backup Information

Create 1 scrollable backup page with:

  • Average power over 3s / 10s / whole ride
  • Current percentage of power zone
  • Max and average heart rate
  • GPS signal quality
  • Battery level

You won’t check this on the main climbing view, but it’s there to flip to when you stop.

Auto Pause vs. Manual Pause

Recommendation for Wuling: Turn off auto pause

  • Reason: Time spent stopping for photos, refueling, or resting counts toward your total time, giving a more honest picture
  • Exception: If you only want to see “pure riding time,” turning it on is fine too

Garmin Climb Pro

Garmin Edge series devices have a Climb Pro feature:

  • Automatically detects climb segments
  • Shows remaining distance and ascent
  • Visualizes progress with a progress bar

How to enable it:

  1. Set up your route (Wuling GPX file)
  2. Edge will automatically launch Climb Pro when you start riding
  3. It automatically switches to the Climb Pro screen when you enter a climb segment

Screen Brightness

  • Strong sunlight (midday at the Wuling summit): Brightest setting
  • Overcast / early morning: Medium
  • Night / tunnels: Auto or dimmest
  • Garmin Edge: Can be set to adjust automatically

Screen Colors (Garmin 850+)

  • Background color: White background with black text is clearest
  • Alert color: Automatically turns red at high heart rate (requires setup)

Bike Computer Battery Management

Pre-race check:

  • Garmin Edge 1040: 35-45 hours on a full charge — more than enough for a 5-hour Wuling ride
  • Garmin Edge 530: 20 hours on a full charge
  • Wahoo Bolt: 15 hours
  • Karoo 2: 12 hours (shortest)

Battery-saving tips:

  • Turn off Bluetooth (unless using a heart rate strap / power meter)
  • Turn off Wi-Fi
  • Turn off notifications
  • Lower brightness (except at midday)
  • Turn off unnecessary sensors (such as radar lights)

Alert Settings

Heart Rate Alert

  • Upper limit: 90% of max heart rate (e.g. 170 bpm)
  • Action: Beeps when exceeded
  • Purpose: Reminds you to slow down

Power Alert

  • Upper limit: 95% of FTP (e.g. 195W)
  • Action: Sound + vibration
  • Purpose: Prevents you from blowing up

Battery Alert

  • Below 20%: Reminds you to charge after the ride

Post-Ride Data Analysis

After uploading to Strava / TrainingPeaks, focus on:

  1. Power curve: Is it consistent across sections (steady)?
  2. Heart rate and power decoupling: If heart rate keeps rising while power drops in the last 1-2 hours → you’ve run out of energy
  3. Cadence distribution: Average and minimum values
  4. Energy expenditure (kJ): Reference for your next fueling plan

Conclusion

Your bike computer is your dashboard, and what you need on the road to Wuling is clarity, speed, and focus. 8 fields on 1 page let you concentrate on pedaling and breathing. Too much data is just a distraction — keeping it simple beats being fancy.
