Westward Wuling Breakfast Guide: What to Eat 3 Hours Before Departure to Avoid Stomach Pain

“Eat well to have the strength to climb Wuling” is the biggest misconception among beginners. Eating at the wrong time or eating the wrong things will leave your stomach churning for the entire first half of the ride, making it impossible to focus on pedaling.

The 3 Tasks of Breakfast

  1. Replenish glycogen stores (overnight sleep depletes about 50-80g)
  2. Stabilize blood sugar (avoid hypoglycemia at the start)
  3. Provide slow-release energy (fuel for the first 1-2 hours)

Timing: 3 Hours Before Departure

Why 3 Hours

  • Complete digestion: Most food reaches the small intestine within 2-3 hours
  • Stable blood sugar: Avoid rebound hypoglycemia after the insulin peak
  • Empty stomach feeling: No churning while riding

Typical Wuling Schedule

  • 08:00 Departure
  • 05:00 Wake up, eat breakfast
  • 05:30 Get ready, load the bike
  • 06:30 Head to the starting point
  • 07:30 Final fueling before the start
  • 08:00 Departure

Ideal Breakfast (for 7-8 hour training / long rides)

Total Calories: 500-700 kcal

  • 50-60% carbohydrates
  • 20-25% protein
  • 15-25% fat (small amount)

Example Combo A: “The Classic”

  • 60g oats (dry weight) + 250ml milk + 1 banana + 1 tablespoon honey
  • Approximately 550 kcal, 90g carbs, 15g protein

Example Combo B: “The Taiwanese Style”

  • 1.5 bowls of white rice + 2 eggs (boiled or fried) + 1 banana
  • Approximately 600 kcal, 100g carbs, 15g protein

Example Combo C: “The Light Option” (for those with small stomachs)

  • 2 slices of toast + 1 tablespoon peanut butter + banana
  • Approximately 450 kcal, 70g carbs

Foods to Avoid

High Fat

  • Fried foods, bacon, cheese
  • Slow to digest, heavy on the stomach

High Fiber

  • Whole wheat bread, raw vegetables, fruit peels
  • Prone to causing gas and diarrhea

Lactose

  • If you don’t drink milk regularly, don’t try it on race day
  • Switch to whey or lactose-free milk

Spicy Food, Excess Caffeine

  • Irritates the stomach, causes diarrhea
  • 1 cup of coffee is OK, 3 cups is not

Fueling 30 Minutes Before Departure

  • 1 banana: slow-release sugar
  • 200-300ml sports drink: hydration + electrolytes
  • 1 energy gel (optional): fast-release sugar

Common Mistakes

Mistake 1: “Eating Too Much”

Result: Heavy stomach, hard to push hard in the first hour

Mistake 2: “Eating Too Little / Not Eating”

Result: Hypoglycemia in the first 2 hours, dizziness, shaking

Mistake 3: “Timing Too Late”

Result: Starting to ride while still digesting, stomach cramps

Mistake 4: “Trying New Foods”

Result: Stomach not adapted, possible diarrhea

Mistake 5: “Only Eating Sweets”

Result: Blood sugar spikes and crashes, hitting a low 1 hour after starting

For Those with Sensitive Stomachs

Start Eating Light from Dinner the Night Before

  • No fried food, hot pot, or spicy food
  • No alcohol

Simplify Breakfast to the Extreme

  • White rice + salt + a little pork floss
  • Or white toast + honey
  • Slightly reduced portion (400-500 kcal)

Take One More Energy Gel 60 Minutes Before the Start

  • Short duration, small amount, less stress on the stomach

Caffeine Strategy

Timing: 45-60 Minutes Before Departure

  • Caffeine takes 30-60 minutes to peak
  • Still effective after 5 hours of exercise

Dosage

  • 3-6 mg/kg body weight
  • For a 70kg rider: 210-420mg
  • 1 cup of strong coffee is about 80-120mg

Notes

  • If you’re already used to daily coffee in the week before the race, no need to increase the dose
  • Reduce the amount if you’re sensitive to caffeine
  • Diuretic effect → hydrate more

Special Situations

No Appetite Early in the Morning

  • At least eat an energy bar + sports drink
  • Fuel immediately 30 minutes after starting

So Nervous You Feel Like Vomiting

  • Focus on liquids: sports drink, energy drink mix
  • Small amounts of solids: white toast, banana

Poor Sleep Due to Stress the Night Before

  • Don’t try new foods
  • Eat familiar foods, in reduced amounts
  • Hydrate extra (caffeine can worsen fatigue)

Conclusion

Breakfast is the foundation of Wuling. Practice your breakfast during every long ride in training and find the combination that your stomach is most friendly with. On race day, don’t innovate, don’t take risks — use familiar foods to put your body in the best condition at the 08:00 starting line.
